Dalaman Station

In 1906, Alexandria train station was constructed by mistake in Dalaman and the building still exists and serves today as the headquarters of the state farm. The year before the construction (in 1905) the then Khedive of Egypt Abbas Hilmi Pasha had acquired a large part of the fertile plain and had decided to set up a plantation in the region. He had ordered the plans and the material for his projected residence here to his architects in France, at the same as the plans and the material for a train station for Alexandria in Egypt. Unfortunately, the two simultaneous shipments were misdirected, the materials for his residence heading towards Egypt, and the Alexandria train station ending up in Dalaman. Since it was going to be too expensive to re-ship everything to the right destination, the station was built in Dalaman anyway, with even a few miles of purposeless railway track.

The above is from Wikipedia and, for me, has all the makings of an urban myth. Is anyone in a position to know or ask where this building is or was?

Re: Dalaman Station

It is a true story as I have researched it earlier this year and the Abbas's family.
It's situated within the State farm, the entrance to the farm is opposite the green palm tree at the traffic roundabout on the airport road. You can go in there free of charge, where you can also buy seasonal produce.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, Penny. Unfortunately, I think it's on the low resolution bit of Google Earth, so further investigation will have to wait a few weeks.

Are you able to read Ottoman Turkish for your researches or is there later information?

Hi
No I am not able to read Turkish, found an english language site, which I'm trying to find again!
As to Google earth, the reason you can't see is because the airport has a military base there, so they have blanketed that area for security reasons.
Somewhere I found a lot of photos of the farm and when I find them again, I'll let you know.

Re: Dalaman Station

Just to add to the story, many workers from the Sudan were bought over to Dalaman from the Sudan to work in the plantation...many of their descendants still live in the Dalaman/Ortaca area. Anyone got any other interesting facts on Dalaman?
