The High Street Gets a Face Lift!

Hi Dalamaners,

We are getting a face lift! For those of you who aren't around, this is what the main street looks like at the moment. Earlier this week the belediye workers came and cut down the barriers from down the middle of the road and dug up the palm trees. Today we have the JCB digging up the road bricks and the local fire engine damping down the dust. The Başkan popped in to tell us we will be having new planters along the street, just like the ones in Paris! Not sure if he is going to erect an arch at the end, we'll just have to wait and see!

Hi DD,

Oh that's evokes so many feelings. Excitement and sadness. Has the plastic palm gone from the roundabout? That piece of plastic was my main source of direction while I got my initial bearings without my man!

Many thanks for the photos. Things had already changed such a lot from October to April and now more. Wow. So sad I cant do the trip in July now. I guess it might be safer now to drive down, some vehicle always reversed out of a no parking slot at speed! Was always a risk driving down but loved the challenge.

Don't worry Debbie, The plastic palm tree is still there! I think everyone uses that as a point of reference so if they take it down I will start a petition to have it put back.

Will post more photos as the work progresses.

That's why we love it! It's coconuts light up at night!!!

Bet you all want one now. It would be great for Maggie's pole dancing club, don't you think?

Hi Freda, I saw your question a few days ago and haven't had time to respond. Originally I was going to say about 2 months but I saw a quote another thread today that said 'when hell freezes over' and I am tempted to offer the same reply!

After the first initial flurry of activity the Belediye workers disappeared, so we have half a street of block paving and half a street of sand. Everyone is ignoring the 'No Entry' signs and driving and parking as usual, except it's a bit of an obstacle trying to avoid the raised manhole covers.

Don't you just love Turkey! The H&S brigade back in the UK would be having a fit!

Do you think that they will put those crazy railings back in?

It was a lot easier to drive, and also for pedestrians before they errected those railings.

My understanding is that they are going to make it a one way street so, no, I don't think they will put them back. Should be interesting as no-one ever seems to take any notice of one-way systems anyway.

A one way street? It'll be total carnage outside the Sofra!!

I thought a one way street in Dalaman was "whichever way I'm going"
