Google Earth
Hi,
The left hand side of Dalaman on google Earth has been 'de-fuzzed'. However, it has also slipped back about ten years by the look of it. Gone is the new airport terminal, also the Therme Maris hotel has disappeared. On the main street the cars appear to be parked at very strange angles to the buildings.
Handy if you want to know what the town centre used to look like-the plastic palm at the botton end has gone too.

Re: Google Earth
Could it be for "security reasons" as Dalaman is a military airport?

Re: Google Earth
I don't think Google do that. If they agree to hide something, they pixelate it heavily rather than putting in old images. Even the most sensitive military sites are not disguised by old images. They are very reluctant to agree to this form of censorship, especially, I imagine, for a public airport.

Re: Google Earth
Google does use old images, Dalyan is on a different scan to Dalaman and is from Winter 2003/4. I know this as this is when we bought our house and the houses opposite are under construction in the image and were at the time. They were not there summer 2003 and were complete by summer 2004.

Re: Google Earth
Don't worry Ann, it hasn't gone back 10 years. I think Google have recently updated the site and the pictures of Dalaman are about 3 or 4 years old, same as everywhere else. The airport, as you say, is now visible and it is obvious that they were starting work on the new terminal at the time, which ties in the the age of the photos. The Therme Maris is there, perhaps you were looking in the wrong place? The high street pictures are from before they put up the barriers (which they have now taken down!) and before they moved the plastic palm tree to this position. It was moved from the roundabout further up at the junction with the Fehtiye road.
Hope this helps put your mind at rest?!!!!

Re: Google Earth
Sorry, what I meant was I did not think they would choose an old image over a newer one just to disguise something like an airport. Yes, they do use old images, you are correct.

I think Google earth is a waste of space because as you say its at least 3 years out of date and often bears no relation to the actual landscape.
Our valley was more or less waste land at the time of the scan with about 2 isolated villas and our complex which completed in 2005 hasnt even started yet.
I think landscapes change so regularly that there is no point to it and the clarity is terrible sometimes.
