Dalamites
Gunydin folks,
There seem to be a number of people here on the Dalaman forum but over the last week other that to intro ourselves it does seem very quiet in Dalaman. Could be this is why we bought our property here rather than the major resorts where all the banter seems to be focused.
Is there no one interested in whats going on in and around Dalaman??
There is a lot of development going on and we would be very glad to hear from anyone who is looking in the area. We were there for a long weekend at the end of April. The weather was picking up although shorts are pretty much the dress code for me most of the time even when we were there over Christmas!! Well we had to experience it for ourselves didn't we.?? Spent a few days in Istanbul before going down to 'D'.
We believe we are very fortunate in that we have some fantastic Turkish neighbours who are always very pleased to see us. God knows why as it is difficult trying to communicate but they do try for our sakes. Within hours of arriving they come round with fruits and vegies and the like and it really humbles us as we know how much effort goes into their gardens come small holdings to produce their food and supplement their income.
Of course when we return bearing a few gifts they are also extremely greatfull.
I have read a number of the posts on the site now and overall I think the website is excellent with some very balanced discussion points and points of view. It's very interesting to read some of the issues discussed and the follow up that comes from them. One particular subject that always seems to hit home for me is the lack of respect given by tourists to the sensitivities of muslim society. We Brits as a nation are pretty much becoming very laid back when it comes to showing respect for these sensistivities. Particulary in the more outlying rural areas where the locals are very freindly and always want to know what your up to. I have never failed to be amazed at their open-ness and hospitality. You'd be hard pressed to get the time of day here in the UK unless you knew the people. We are fast becoming a nation with our heads up our own if you know what I mean in our own country.
I'll give it a rest for now hopefully some of you might be tempeted to get in touch in the not to distant future as we would love to hear from those in the Dalaman commune.
Yours aye
Archie :-)

Re: Dalamites
Hi Jude B & welcome to the Forum if i haven't already done so.
I take your point and see where your coming from. I have
travelled all over the world over the last 37 years and the
Turks for me have been by far the best, they are friendly and
kind and will go out of their way to help you no matter what.
It's a country where you can bring up your kids, or let them
wonder without any worries unlike many other countries.
My nephew and his girlfriend fly out for a holiday to Dalaman
mid June both in their early twenties yet wanted somewhere
fairly quiet, i hope they've picked the right place as i have no
idea what the area is like.
So come on you Dalamites lets here all about the Dalaman region.

Re: Dalamites
I was reading about the Dalaman Tourism Project which was launched by Prime Minister Erdogan in 2005 and it isn't scheduled to be finished until 2010-2011 so the area won't really be suitable for buy to let for a while yet. I suppose that most people on this forum wanting to buy a holiday home which they can let out when they're not using it concentrate on more established areas.
We hope Dalaman remains quieter than the main resorts. At least you can walk around without being harassed and it is still 'Turkish'.
Some nice hotels being built near Sarigerme plus the golf course and marina but I think that Sarigerme is about 12k from Dalaman.
We are going to retire to Dalaman within the next few months and we are looking forward to meeting up with some more Dalamites (ex-pats and locals). We've visited three times and met some very nice people already.
Cheers
Mike

Re: Dalamites
Hi All
I move out to Dalaman a week today. The reasons we bought there, were the quietness, close to airport, away from the hussle of seaside resorts and many more reasons.
It's nice to know there are quite a few regulars that holiday there or live permanently. I'm sure in the following months I'll bump into you all.

Re: Dalamites
Penny,
Jude and I will look forward to meeting up with you when we arrive on the 19 June or shortly thereafter. Same reasons we chose Dalaman. I'd not a big place and almost a one street town, although the private accomodations that we have seen over the last 2 years a spread around with no major concentration in any one area.
If you'd like to pm us we can provide you a contact phone number that we will have with us there.
Regards
Archie & Jude
