Exclamation Electric Bills

Has anyone experienced usage of electricity and being billed when the property is unoccupied? We got stung with a 300 YTL bill last December when the property had not been occupied since the previous September. Our average monthly bill during the summer months is 60 YTL. There are no key holders. Aydem have checked the meter and said it's okay. One hears lots of stories about people stealing electricity but I don't know how it's done - we're in a apartment - block of four. For the past 5 years we had zero electric consumption during the winter months. Also my meter has a flashing battery light on it just like a battery needing charged symbol on a mobile phone - none of my neighbours meters are showing this - anyone know what this means?

Everyone seems to say the same thing - 'it happens' and 'there's no way to get your money back'.

Re: Electric Bills

sadly theft of electricity is common - especially in apartment blocks where they know you will not be here all winter.
I have seen cables from neighbouring properties switched to other meters.......................

Re: Electric Bills

The flashing light just signifies that you have supply from Aydem.
It won't flash if you have a power cut or you switch the supply off.
There should be a switch on the meter whereby you can turn off the supply.
This is in addition to your main fusebox which should be inside your property.

Do you switch everything off from your main fusebox?

Do you have someone reliable and trustworthy who could check the meter for you whilst you are away?

Re: Electric Bills

if you have a common meter cupboard where there are a number of meters and isolators for the building or site, you could try one of these, you would be better taking some photos of the isolator first, they tend to be siemens or legrand in the main, you could also fit some meter seals which if tampered with will break or tear, it wont cure the problem but will act as a deterent

Re: Electric Bills

I switch everything off at main fuse box in the apartment when leaving. I can't get into the shared fusebox which is outside to switch off at the meter as it seems I need a special type of key to open the box cover. Besides if anyone is tapping in to my supply at the meter not show that simply switching it off is going to help - is it?

Re: Electric Bills

Someone on my site has had this problem for two years. Still get electricity bills for over 90TL monthly when they are not there. The only time they didn't get one was when the rented apartment above them was unoccupied for two months. Aydem stated nothing wrong with meter. I think this explains what happened to them - someone had tapped into their electrcity. I think the advice to put seals on your meter as a deterrent is the one to follow.
