Re: Winter flights

Thomas Cook have flights for the usual 3 weeks over Xmas/New Year. Other ways are going via Istanbul with Pegasus or linking with the Easyjet flight from Istanbul to Luton.
Turkish Airlines also run scheduled flights from Manchester and London to Dalaman changing at Istanbul.
The now defunct aegeanflights used to operate as well, a few years ago running full winter flights direct to Dalaman, but as always its a matter of economics.

Re: Winter flights

Pegasus seem to have reinstated the thru flights for 2012/2013.good service I thought.
Just looking at sept return flights so costly anyone know why???.
Looked at monarch Luton to dalaman out at 100 ish back 350 to 450 ish.
Never seen them so high and can't work out why.

Re: Winter flights

hi

i have lost the plot on flights [from gatwick to] to dalaman, too. last year we booked about a month in advance around this time for late september and the price went down nearer the flight time.

this time, what was roughly 200-plus last year [dropping to under 150 at the last minute] - is close to 300 in 2012.

i decided to go to a travel agent [they still exist!] and his theory was 'they would rather have one person on a flight paying 500 rather than five paying 100', a logic i couldn't quite grasp since five people will buy more stuff on a plane than one.

so, we are playing poker with the airlines - does anyone have any advice? forgive me if this has been asked on a million threads before, but i am just following on from the last post.

of course, september isn't really winter, i suppose....

Re: Winter flights

Holiday airlines are now adopting more and more the same business model that scheduled airlines have always had - and that Easyjet followed - namely that the earlier you book the cheaper the seat, and the nearer the departure date, the more expensive the seat.

Easyjet - itself a scheduled airline - was the first to adopt this business model for the holiday market. As a result, a one way seat from the UK to Dalaman for tomorrow which first went on sale almost a year ago at 24 will now cost 230. The old idea of waiting till the last minute and they will drop the price does not fit into their business model.

They have made their money on that aircraft by slowing increasing seat prices month on month and now are quite happy to let that seat be empty - because they know if they fall back into the last minute deals people will go back to not booking early, they wont get their money 10 months in advance along with the interest.

Although Thomas Cook have sometimes done the last minute reductions, I think they too are now starting to realise that the scheduled airline business plan works and as a result seats in the next few days are around the 200 mark for one ways, and even in late September returns are pushing 300.

Obviously the people who benefit are those lucky enough to be able to book with the likes of Easyjet when the flights are released (50 return tickets are usually available) and if not the message where airlines are following the scheduled business plan is to book as early as possible to get the best price.
However the days of getting a last minute cheap deal (as opposed to the odd one way cheap ticket that has a ridiculously expensive return leg with it) are I truly believe a thing of the past.

Re: Winter flights

I agree with villabaris1, we wanted a last minute flight for September and it is neally 800 pounds for two people thats a joke, great if you can book so far in advance but not for people who want a last minute holiday.

Angry Re: Winter flights

We are equally frustrated, trying to find flights to come out for the New Year. Flights have been going up for the last 3 years and for the last 2 we have booked as soon as flight schedules have come available. We have been caught out twice, having to change our flight dates but at the cost of an admin fee of 50 each it still worked out cheaper buying well in advance.

As to TC, we wondered why villa bookings in Dalyan are down for September and October this year and it is true that the return price flights are over 150 however they are selling complete package holidays for Marmaris etc, Hotels B&B for as little as 199 pp including flights for the October half term holiday. There are other late deals for September for 165. We have met couples who regularly book these chaep late deals and tell the Travel Rep at the airport that they will not be going to the accommodation and everything has worked fine for them staying in Dalyan.

What we need are more flights to Dalaman and an extended season to cater for the Dalyan addicts like us. This September will be our 39th time in Dalyan.

Looking forward to our next Efes
