Need advice on how to keep a UK motorbike

Hi all,
An english friend is wintering in my villa in Dalyan. He came over a few months ago on a motorbike purchased in UK (google oldgitonabike.com for an entertaining description of his escapades en route). Can anyone help him to unravel the complexities of keeping a UK registered motorbike in Turkey? He intends leaving Turkey next spring & wants to use his bike in the interim, but we have heard some hairy stories about how complicated it all is.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Re: Need advice on how to keep a UK motorbike

To my knowledge he can only keep the bike in Turkey for 6 months, when he entered Turkey his bike would have been recorded on his passport. Here comes the complicated bit, unless he has applied for residency or has an extended visa he can only stay in Turkey for 90 days in 180, before the 90 days is up he must leave Turkey with his bike and then can not re-enter until the 180 days has elapsed. Unless of course he has retired and receiving a state pension, then he can keep the bike here but must have a residency.
I am sure that if any of this info is incorrect then another member on the forum will be quick to post the correct info.

Blimey ,I hope some of the advice given about if he can stay longer applies to him ,because if he came over a few months ago ,then he cant have much longer to go before him & his sickle need to hit the road back to the good old UK .?? [ or spend time in Bulgaria or the greek islands before headed back into Turkey .

He has already sorted his residency and is retired and receiving a pension, so fingers crossed it will all be okay. Thanks for your help :-)

Tell him to look into the requirements for being retired and keeping a motorbike in Turkey,
once he sees what is involved he might change his mind.

Re: Need advice on how to keep a UK motorbike

I was going to bring 2 motorcycles over from the uk but it worked out more trouble than it was worth, send the bike back to the uk and buy one her in turkey.

Under Turkish law, a foreign-plated vehicle can be brought into Turkey for a maximum of six months in a 12 month period. After six months the vehicle must leave the country for at least six months; after this time, the vehicle can be brought into Turkey again. Note: this can only be done twice, the vehicle may not be brought in for a third six-month period.

Holders of a retirement visa may bring their car into Turkey for a maximum period of one year after which the vehicle must be taken out of Turkey.

There is a penalty for vehicle owners who do not obey the law.

Try these links may give you some of the info you require.
