Health insurance - glaucoma

Hello, I wonder whether anyone can advise us on Health Insurance in Turkey. It is our intention to move to Dalyan in the very near future. However, as I have Glaucoma I need to have regular checks on my eyes (presently in the UK every 6 to 9 months) and I use prescription eye drops every day. I have heard that there is a very good Hospital in Fethiye where they specialize in eye problems. Is there anyone with a similar condition living in Dalyan? Also can anyone advise what we need to do regarding Health Insurance, or advise where we can get some information. We would need to take out insurance for both my husband and I. Many thanks in advance.

Hello Hummas, if you are talking about health ins. then yes there is national health ins. here, at the moment it is 245liras/mth and covers husband and wife.
However what you have is an already existing condition so I don't think they would cover you for it, no doubt someone will come up with more info for you.

Just to add to Warren's post.....I don't think you are able to join the scheme until you have held a resident's permit for a minimum of one year.

Re: Health insurance - glaucoma

You definitely can't join the SGK health scheme until you've been resident - ie living - in Turkey for 1 year.

I believe that a medical exam is now needed as part of the procedure for joining the scheme, as is disclosure of pre-existing conditions that may not be covered. There was a recent post about this - use the search facility for info on SGK.

If you are talking about the SGK (government insurance) I think you will find that according to the Ortaca SGK office this has changed now and each person of the couple is taken as an individual at 235 lira each a month. Some married couples have received letters telling them that the wives are no longer part of their husband's insurance and have had to rejoin in their own right. Having said that, and talking to people in other areas, it would appear that this may be just Ortaca's own interpetation of the rules, and as they have often got it all wrong before I would check with HQ on this.
One thing is definite though, and that is that now you do have to have a full medical at the devlet (local government hospital) before you may be accepted onto the SGK scheme.
If you are under sixty years old it is possible to join a private health insurance scheme, with their own caveats, but not over the age of sixty.
Unfortunately there is no agreement with the British NHS system that most of us have paid into all of our working lives, although this too may change - who knows?

Yes Dalyanfan I read about this only now covering one person of a married couple, but have not heard anything about it happening here in Alanya, I will go to the SGK office next time in Alanya and enquire about it.

Re: Health insurance - glaucoma

As the person who started the original thread on the changes it may be worth re-reading my original post.

Major SGK Change

Only wives who are receiving a UK State pension are being told they are no longer covered on their husband's policy and have to have their own cover which is currently 245TL a month for GSS (Genel Saglik Sigorta).

There was never any suggestion in my posting, or from the SGK, that the scheme no longer covered ALL spouses. It was simply those who were in receipt of a State pension from their home country.

The medical at the Devlet hospital included ECG, chest X-Ray and blood tests enabling the hospital to issue a "past and present chronic illness report." There were no questions asked about previous illness or operations.
