Exclamation Save Iztuzu Platform

After the meeting in which Prof. Yakup Kaska presented DEKAMER's building plans, a Platform has been formed that will fight the plans in court. Since the professor accuses the Platform of spreading wrong information, the Platform has written a statement, which explains in detail what we (do not) want and why.. The integral English text is found below:

"The aim of the Save İztuzu Platform is to cancel the construction plans of DEKAMER at İztuzu Beach. Therefore we started a court case against the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization on 4 November 2013 to stop the project.

Our Concerns

The implementation of this project means opening İztuzu Beach to construction, with more bound to follow.

As we all know, İztuzu Beach is a protected area because it is the breeding ground of the Loggerhead turtle, an endangered species. Köyceğiz Lake and the surrounding area, with its canals, wetlands, delta, beach, reeds and forests is a rich ecosystem that is the habitat and breeding ground for a diversity of animals.

These are the reasons why the area has a protected status and was declared one of Turkey's first Special Environmental Protection Areas. Köyceğiz Lake, as well as Alagöl, Sülüklü Lake, Sülüngür Lake, Tuz (Salt) Lake on which bank DEKAMER is situated, and İztuzu Beach are all on the migration route of migratory birds. In addition the region is of high archaeological value; even Salt Lake is a historical site because of the ancient salt pans on its bank. DEKAMER is situated in an area that is an important natural reserve, an archaeological site and part of a Special Environmental Protection Area.

Due to the location, the project that DEKAMER wants to implement is in conflict with Turkish legislation and relevant international environmental protection agreements. If this project is implemented, a 7.5 m high building will be constructed in an area which is protected under Turkish legislation and international treaties. Regardless of how many scientific arguments are brought forward, this is a violation of the law and that is the reason why we all oppose the project.

In all likelihood trees will be cut (a number of trees in the allocated area have already been marked). After construction a 22,000 m2 area will be fenced and the forest lane will be closed. More coaches full of people will be coming to this part of the beach and the scenery from the sea -which now only consists of the beach, trees and mountains- will be spoilt by a huge steel turtle-shaped building ... This is what we oppose; the proper location of this project is not İztuzu Beach, which is under protection.

Our Recommendation

We understand and support the reasons of DEKAMER's project. For the reasons stated above, we as a Platform feel that we need to repeat our proposal that has been expressed at every prior occasion so far: We recommend that the project proposed by DEKAMER should be implemented in Dalyan, where it does not impose a threat to wildlife, is in accordance with legislation, is outside the protected site, and where tourism would benefit by more employment. We will be more than willing to give you all sorts of support to realise this.

The approval of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Management in terms of allocation of the forest and the construction is alarming for the protection of our country, its forest and coastal management at present and in the future. We therefore appeal to the responsible ministries and state organisations.

Our last remark is for DEKAMER: Please stop saying 'no trees will be cut' and explain how you can plan to construct a building in a protected area, because that is the only thing we are opposing. Unfortunately you are spreading false information. None of us are against the work you are doing, no one is saying that your present facility is good enough as it is, and none of us are against a hospital, as has been expressed on several occasions. You will have to admit that your shacks and containers at the beach have increased like mushrooms by the year and now you think it is time for a huge building. Actually now the time has come to show the wisdom of genuine scientists. Please stop this illegal action. Please protect İztuzu Beach in accordance with ethics and nature protection laws, so that your conscience is clear.
