Turtle nesting area.

I was on the beach at Ituzu yesterday and noticed that the area between the rope line and the wooden pillars,(which is supposed to be out of bounds to anyone sitting or sunbathing on) was being used by lots of tourists, one family had even pushed an sun shade into the sand right next to marked turtles nest! I spoke to the life guard there and he said it was not his job to move people of that area, and told me to see the man in the "white shirt" in the café and tell him, this I did and he then went down and asked those people to please move of this protected area, whats bothers me though is that I seldom go to the beach now,and is this happening every day? In past years there were patrols of officials who would monitor this beach area and move any body off, this now seems to have stopped ,has anyone any ideas about what could be done about this?
I would be grateful for any suggestions,

regards BL.

Re: Turtle nesting area.

Yes BL I'd noticed that happening more this year. For many years that area was always kept clear.

Todays Hurriyet

Last month, the local municipality of Dalyan had decided to rent the beach, which was until now run by a public cooperative, to a private company.

Activists have gathered 38,410 signatures against the recent plans to privatize İztuzu Beach, after the authorities’ attempt to open one of the last untouched seashores to investors caused huge outcry. The sandy beach on the Mediterranean, located within an archeological site, is a small haven for loggerhead turtles (caretta caretta) and a specially protected area.

Last month, the local municipality of Dalyan had decided to rent the beach, which was until now managed by a public cooperative, to a private company.

The Platform to Save İztuzu Beach has sent all of the signatures expressing their concerns over the privatization to the Environment Ministry, Muğla Governor’s Office and the Environment Protection Foundation of Turkey.

Often referred to as “Turtle Beach,” İztuzu has had a protected status since 1998 and is part of the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Environmental Protection area.

A recent project of building a hospital facility for the sea turtles was also opposed by the environmentalists, who objected that such a construction might have a negative effect to the turtles’ habitat if located next to the beach. Their concerns had prompted Environment Minister İdris Güllüce to negatively react, accusing them of fanaticism.
