Mosquito Netting
Where is the best place to buy mosquito netting, can you buy it by the metre and how much does it cost? I have been thinking that it might be possible to enclose our terrace with netting so we can eat our evening meals outdoors in peace.
My plan is to hang the netting from the pergola and fix it somehow along the floor of the terrace, so I would need a lot of netting. Has anyone else tried this, and did it work?

Guz, there is a pot plant you can buy that Mozzies hate and won't come near. You will quite often see it on outdoor restaurant tables. I am unsure of the name but am sure some of the Turkish lingo lickers will know.

Hi,we used the curtains from Ikea,i think they are called lill ,2 in apack for about 3.00 and they are huge about 3m each curtain they are very lightweight and easy to pack in your suitcase we put them round our terrace last summer and never got bitten. We havent yet come up with agreat fixing solution but for now we are using some little curtain clips from Ikea, they are metal grabber clips, , sold in packs of 10 ,hope this has helped.

No-nem, where do you get your expressions from? Do you make them up yourself?
Thanks for the tip about the plant, but with a few asthmatics in the family we have as little greenery as possible around the house.........one of them seems to be allergic to anything that grows. Might get the plant for when I'm there on my own but I'm looking into this netting solution for them. Have you seen the net sold by the metre anywhere?

It has helped, thank you. We don't have an Ikea in Dublin yet but I think there is one planned for later this year. At least now I know that it can be done. Isn't there some kind of weight that you can have sewn into net curtains to keep them from blowing in the breeze?

Re: Mosquito Netting
Maria, you could take a trip up to the IKEA in Belfast. Great journey now with the new motorway. Failing that go to the sanayi in Guzelcamli if you want mosquito nets made. Yes you can buy nice little weights to hang on the bottom of curtains and table-cloths; I've seen these in Migros.

Re: Mosquito Netting
Hi yes you can get weighted nets so dont know if the haberdashers would sell it seperately, probably do somewhere, the only thing is i dont know if that would be any good for the sudden hurricane style winds we get out there even in the middle of AugustLOL,these nets are the same material as the mossie nets Ikea also sell ,we have these round the beds, and can be cut to size with no hemming needed so my husband cut some and covered the windows,it can hardly be seen and it works.

Alison: I'm not sure my old jalopy would make it to Belfast. I'm supposed to be booking it in for the nct test (our equivalent of mot) but keep putting it off. Where and what is the Sanayi in Guzelcamli?
Cathnjohn: We have net curtains on all our windows and they would work a treat if everyone would remember to keep them closed. We get those winds too! If this idea works out it will be like having an extra living room. I'm not a fan of the Turkish idea of an open-plan "American kitchen".

Re: Mosquito Netting
It is possible to buy curtain weights in haberdashery and curtain shops in the UK. It comes by the metre and consists of little lead weights encased in a sort of cotton tape. There are various sizes dependent upon the weight of the curtain you want to use it with. The easiest way to use it is to thread it through the bottom hem. Failing this is can be tacked to the curtain by hand.
Another way is to buy chain by the metre and thread it through, tack it on or use safety pins every metre or so. If you want it to be solidly fixed, you can also slot plant bamboo canes in the hem.
I have used all the above in different places and all work well.
