does every house in turkey have damp?
Just intrested to find out if everyones house has damp to some extent on the turkish coast?
the place we have bought has a little but alot of the villa's we saw were really bad with it many seemed like rising damp.
is it in the way the places are built?
is it lack of damp course?
or just that they are all empty for years before being lived in?
how do you treat damp ion these buildings?
ours seems to be where our villa joins another villa ( maybe prevailling wind and rain?)
any help would be good.
are some paints not of very good quality? can you get better paints that don't fall off the wall?
thanks
paul & emma

Re: does every house in turkey have damp?
Hi paul & emma
are you sure its damp and not the salts of the building materials seeping through, as most new buildings suffer from this. If the paintwork is flaking off in small dry particles it could be due to the salts, if this is the case, just wash down the walls with clean water, wait until dry, then re-emulsion using a good brand of paint. To check whether or not its damp causing the problem, you need someone to come in and inspect the walls with a damp meter

Re: does every house in turkey have damp? YES
Hi I have a Villa in Kusadasi and yes it has rising damp after the long wet winters, I have looked at dozens of houses and all been the same, I have asked my neighbours and their answer is scrape it off and re paint every year, it seems that damp courses are not used why for the sake of about £25 I do not know, but have a look at all the villa and other building going up , there simply is no membrane or damp proof course. I asked several builders who said " It would add to the cost" £25 hardly a lot is it.
I seem to have stopped mine using airbricks and fans, all year. Long story but its worked.

Re: does every house in turkey have damp?
Er no here in Antalya we dont see this problem so much, certainly not with new builds which all have great big thick damp proof membranes, the builders here seem to be in a bit of a private competition as to who can give best quality. which is great for the buying customers. Also on the outside walls we are now seeing the multiskin coating systems which thermally insulate as well as keep the damp out thus you get cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I have to say it does cost more but then you arent paying so much for maintenance down the line so its swing and roundabouts and you get what you pay for. I have been up and down the coast looking at builds and there are some we have walked away from as I wouldnt be comfortable selling them to a client knowing the client can get much higher quality for the same money in the same resort.

Re: does every house in turkey have damp?
The other big problem is leaking roofs. The normal method here is to use wooden shuttering over the roof beams and then rooftiles over the shuttering. Most of the wood they use is unseasoned and very wet. When it dries and shrinks it leaves huge gaps and, if the tiles haven't been well laid, then the rain pours in. The water can sit there for a while and eventually find it's way through the bedroom ceilings and, in somecases, through the walls to the ground floor.
Also, because many houses are built with windows that open inwards, they are not weather proof. As you know, we often get horizontal rain because of the high winds and water will often get in around the windows and penetrate the brickwork or concrete etc.
