Construction jobs in Turkey
I would like to learn Turkish within the next few years, and personally I think the only(quickest) way to learn a foreign language is to go to that country for a few months and throw yourself in the deep end.
You'd think with a Turkish wife I would have picked the language up by now. Not true.
We communicate in English, and all our friends and family speak English, so there has been no reason for me to learn Turkish. And living in England, we're not really exposed to the Turkish language.....Thats my excuse and Im sticking with it!
I certainly couldnt afford to be away from UK for 6 months without working, so I'd need to work in Turkey the day I decide to go.
Ive looked online, but there doesnt seem to be a large number of UK construction companies. Im guessing without any Turkish Id struggle to find employment at a Turkish construction company.
So, for the guys who have been over there for a while:
What are my chances of finding a job in the construction industry out there?
I appreciate the wages wont be comparable, but would only need enough to survive ( and for Efes)
Im a civil engineer, with background in structures and highways and land surveying.
Any thoughts.......

Re: Construction jobs in Turkey
With all the construction going on feverishly in Turkey you would think you would be able to muscle in, maybe get into a partnership. Perhaps you should start your own company.

Re: Construction jobs in Turkey
Why not start to learn some Turkish now to help you. In my home we speak a mixture of Turkish/English.........all the words I know and as I learn new words they are spoken in Turkish and the rest is in English. Sometimes the sentences sound strange but it helps me to learn and remember the words. It has also been a help to my mother inlaw, she has learned some English too this way. I also use post it notes.......I have them stuck all over the house with the Turkish name of the object on it.

Re: Construction jobs in Turkey
Why not contact some of the major worldwide civil engineering companies and consortiums who have projects going on over here, however you may have to adjust, as say, road buiding, although probably similar to Europe, the materials are different, No PFA here!
The other thing being on a negative side from your point of view, is that Turkey is a great engineering country, with thousands of Graduates leaving Uni each year. Many go to Germany and Europe etc. and there are still many jobless! You then have to look at the work permit situation, and will you get one?
Again, on the negative side, you will have difficulty earning anything like a European salary here on Construction. However, on lighter note, when you get here, report to my office at 9am with a shovel and yer on 15ytl a day......cock on Son!!

Hi Gus
You havent mentioned how long you've been married but do you have Dual Nationality? If so then there's no problem about working.

Been married for a year, and dont have dual nationality yet, so I guess I'd have to go workpermit route should I decide to persue the idea.
Im running out of post-it notes.....

Hi Gus
Why don't you pop into your Local Turkish Embassy with your marrage certificate and apply to be a Turkish citizen I did a number of year ago, I wrote a letter there and then stating that I wanted to be a Turkish citizen, they then sent off the letter with copies of my British marrage certiicate and passport to my husbands homeland in Turkey and after a while it came back with a Turkish marrage certificate and my Kimlik card Then no problems you can work. pop in to see me when you are in Turgutreis Regards Liz

Re: Construction jobs in Turkey
Liz,
If I'm not mistaken you have to be married for at least 3 years before becoming a Turkish citizen. It used to be different couple of years ago though...
