Electrical Safety

The attached photo shows the electrical socket underneath my sink. To my mind it is too close to the water connections and the waste pipes, any leaks could go into the socket or a connected plug and I was always taught water and electric don't mix. The buider has told my estate agent there is no risk and he will guarantee it.

I would like to draw on the experience of the TLF and ask is this a typical Turkish arrangement and therefore acceptable or do you think I should insist on it being changed.

Thanks

John

Hi John
I`m not a professional but am an avid DIY. You are quite right in saying that water and elect. dont mix. In Turkey the power sockets all seem to be 2 pin ie Pos & Neg-- no earth! If some of the plumbing gives up and water gets into that socket, if your lucky and whatever shorts out blows its fuse thats OK. But if the fuse doesnt blow the appliance its connected to could be the source of the power trying to go to earth and if someone is touching the appliance they are then the earth seeing as they will be standing on the floor. You can either get the socket moved ( best scenario) or fit a waterproof socket, still not earthed so not so good. Not sure if these are available readily in Turkey. Final option is to cover it up and make sure no water can get to it and dont use that particular socket.
All the best

After having lots of work done in my house you tend to find its (that will do) type of attitude, if it was me i would have it shifted its not in a good place.

Technically there is an earth, the prongs on the top and bottom of the socket are the earth. However many homes are built with very poor earth connections.

I would get them to remove the socket and get the cables out the way, if the developer won't do it get an electrician in. There is probably an access point close by where they can disconnect the spur and pull the cables up and out of the conduit. Labour rates in Turkey are low and it'll probably only cost around 20ytl for this.

What use is a guarantee once you've been fried.

It is typical Turkish, we have a similar arrangement in both our properties, they put them like that for washing machines or dishwashers without really thinking things through.

Re: Elecrical Safety

Thankyou for your replies I have asked the builder to move the socket which he said he would do, if he doesn't I will get someone to do it for me.

Thanks again
