Central heating
We are wondering whether to have electric central heating installed in our house which needs renovating. As we will be living there full time I am wondering whether it will be expensive to run in the winter or would we be better buying a couple of gas heaters. It would be appreciated if anyone could let me know an approximate cost of running electric central heating.

we had gas central heating fitted, (combi boiler, radiators etc,) and it costs a fortune to run! approx £70 a week on gas! so we bought a soba!! the combi hasnt been switched on since! The soba costs us 50YTL a month for wood/logs, and gives plenty of heat!

Hi Paul,
We've been to your house and your soba was so lovely and warm-didn't want to leave-can we move in?

Re: Central heating
And when the electric goes off you won't have any heating either.

Re: Central heating
Same as dalid69, we're all plumbed up for gas central heating, but can't afford to run it. Costs about 25 YTL per day to run on it's minimum setting and that's just for the heating. Doesn't include hot water.

Re: Central heating
hi....beware of gas heaters...we had 2 first year but they kept cutting out after a few hours....thinking they were faulty we had people in ..and it was lack of oxygen ...so he said now and again to open window...ha ha....so we had wood burner and hated the smell of burnt wood....even thou they are really warm...but thought they wernt that cheap to run...so we now have for 2 years convector heaters one in each room...put them on about 4pm on low and keep them running....and when its gets not warm enough downstairs....jan.feb ....we put on UFO that is really hot and cheap to run....hope this helps..all this costs about 35 quid per month

Me, being a bit dim, is not sure what a soba is!! Is it the UK equivalent of a wood burning stove with doors? Could this be put into the chimney which is on our balcony with the barbie in?

Re: Central heating
Yes, a soba is a wood burning stove.
But, if you put it outside you lose the benefit of the heat that the stove gives off.

Re: Central heating
One of my friends have electric central heating and their monthly bill is 1.500 lira !!!!! bloody scary !!!
We use the Klima in the morning as it has a times so nice and cosy when we wake up, then if it gets a wee bit cold we put on the gas heater and that heats up the house very well...plus if the electric does go off which is quite frequent you will still be all cosy !!!
