Help - 3 Phase For Dummies

Anyone care to give a BRIEF description of how, even why, 3 Phase electricity works?

We've got a 3 Phase supply and sometimes find that we've only got power to half the house. Now, I know that we have 3 phase because of our water pump but can't understand why, when the village is blacked-out, we seem to have power in a part of the house and at other times we're completely blacked-out too. When I ask someone for an explanation all I seem to get is "Ah, that'll be because you've got 3 Phase".

We have times when the water pump won't switch-on even when we've got electricity in the house. There are also times when the pump doesn't seem to be getting enough electricity to make it switch off and I have to go out and flick the trip switches to stop it over-heating.

I've got even less interest in Ohms, Amps, Volts etc than I have in Bits, Bytes and Giga-whatsits but a simple explanation from a "Sparkie" would be appreciated.

Re: Help - 3 Phase For Dummies

KKOb they are actually 3 different supplies that run 120 degrees out of phase with each other. A phase is 360 degrees. Mainly used so you can drive motors, machines etc that require that. We used to supply(still do actually) machines that could run on both so if a shop had 3 phase we would use that and if not we could change the links to single phase.

Three-phase electric power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As to your problems the three phase device won't work if one of the phases is down whereas you can have electricity in a part of the house if it is wired like that. By the way I'm not an electrician but I do understand electricity, electronics(trained in the 70s) and i do understand and have trained on TCP/IP and networking. In fact I am a geek.

Re: Help - 3 Phase For Dummies

Thanks for that Martyn. I'd already read the Wikipedia page and a couple of others but still don't really understand why or how. But then I ask, do I really need to ?

They're ****in' with the electric again this morning and now for no reason whatsoever my speakers have pack-up!

Re: Help - 3 Phase For Dummies

I forgot the other reason for having 3 phase is if you alter the order the phases are linked to a motor say you can make it reverse. I think also it can be used for current load reduction. The machines we used to wire were 3 phase at 16amp per phase or 32 amp single phase.

Could I interest you in some IP subnetting or how about truth tables for J-K FlipFlops?
