Emlaks - the good, the bad and the ugly!

The Good:
We just bought a house in Turgutreis through Dogus Emlak and found them to be professional, courteous and honest. They did everything properly and openly, and seem to have a good reputation in the area.

They had the best selection of properties and personally drove us around to see them more than once. An indication of their reputation was the fact that they held keys and even alarm codes for all of the properties and had no problem in getting access for us.

The Bad:
At another property in Kadikalesi - empty new build - it took two weeks for the agent (another emlak) to get the keys. When we tried to get in the keys didn't work and we ended up climbing through a window to look around!
However, we couldn't access upstairs as it was a separate flat, although we had been told there was internal access from the ground floor. A complete waste of our time!

The Ugly:
We were interested in a property in Gumuslak with another agent and we were taken there three times without being able to get in because the guy didn't have keys. On the third time, we waited around for half an hour with a threat that we weren't going back anymore, and eventually the owner came with keys to let us in. Even then we were only able to see the ground floor. The agent knew nothing about the property and after doing our own investigations we discovered it didn't have a habitation certificate and the time frame for getting one after building had expired! Coincidentally, someone else told us about a property in Gumusluk, and we ended up at the same property. Later that day, the first agent was screaming down the phone saying that he wanted his commission and was going to take us to court (just for viewing it?)! My husband, who is Turkish, knew how to tell him where to get off!

So, we have been pleasantly surprised by our experience with Dogus Emlak and went back to them for second viewings of the properties we were interested in. At no point did they pressure us; they only take on properties with "clean" and complete documents and they check this beforehand.

Their office is in the centre of Turgutreis and is far from plush but don't be put off by appearances!

Highly recommended. Isn't it nice to find a good emlak?

Thank you, Nanamo
Hopefully, this is our last move - it will be our third in the last six months since we came to Turkey and our sixth in the last 4 years!
I think we'll satisfy our wanderlust by going backpacking in the future!
