Re: Villa sold - Happy with Emlak!

I do know of a member here that moved to Kos, not sure if he is still there though. I must admit, I do love the Greek Islands, haven't visited the mainland, I'm not too sure if winter living would put me off, I imagine it would be quiet with very few flights, and the weather, not the best. xx

Re: Villa sold - Happy with Emlak!

I did look at Cyprus, but no direct flights from Cork. Also might consider apartment in Hurgada Egypt as you can buy one for about 10,000 Euro. Always loved the Red sea.

Would Egypt not be a risky place to live, security wise?

The Red Sea is beautiful second only the Great Barrier reef for snorkeling. I spent many a time years back there before it all got busy . The last time I went there it had grown too much and it became unbearable. Sharm was my favourite in the early days then I tried Taba. My friend worked and lived in Hurgada. I would say avoid it like the plague. Full of crooks of the native kind and ready to stitch anyone up at a spit of a camel. Alanya is glorious compared to Egypt or the Sinai. Serious homework needed if you ever go there for anything other than snorkeling or diving. That is my opinion of it.

I love Egypt, and have spent several 3 month holidays there, even considered long term renting and spending the winter there. In the end I decided no, but not because of security issues. The visa system is a complete nightmare now, impossible to get a residence visa, only tourist visas for 6 months. I won't bore you with details but the Turkish visa system is a piece of the proverbial compared to Egypt!

I considered Greece, still would if necessary, but what put me off was the health care provision. In my experience (which includes a major heart attack) Turkish hospitals are excellent, and the care second to none. Also I'd have to start paying tax, unlike in Turkey where I'm exempt because of the Dual Tax Agreement with the UK. Turkish bueaurocacy is bad, but I understand that Greece is worse.

Not planning to move from Datca anytime soon!
