Process for 1st time residency in Fethiye as of 30th July 2010
Process for 1st time residency in Fethiye as of 30th July 2010.
If you have not done so you will need to register yourself as living in the area (Nüfus sureti). To do this you need to locate the local "muhtar", you can do this by asking around. I live in Karagozler and ours is the photocopy shop next door but one to the Garanti Bank.
When you find him you will need a form 5(konutta kalanlaraait kimlik bildirme belgesi) you need to fill this in and attach a photo of yourself and your family to it.
Take it back to the muhtar he will stamp and sign it for you.
You need then to take it to the polis merkesi in Gumslukbaşı with a colour copy of your passports clearly showing your entry visa and photo page.
Walk straight and take the door on the left before you enter the main building the man will sign, stamp and give you a copy, to take back to the muhtar who will then take two copies one for himself and one for you with the original and best copy for the passport police.
When you have done this go to the passport police at the marine (ece saray) and request a form ( kaymakamlık makamına fethiye) this is your dilekçe he will list on it the things you need and the amount you must pay.
Fill in the form and take it to the vergi dairese (tax office) which is on the coast road between Fethiye and Çaliş.
Go to the top floor turn left and walk to the end on the desk speak to the person on your rıght look for the sıgn Harç tell them how long you require a residency( the passport police may have wrote the ammount on your dilekçe) for and she wıll gıve you a number, *go down a floor and there wıll be a queue to your front and left give the number to the first person and follow the queue to the next desk and pay, they will give you a recipt this you need for the passport police.
You will require a tax number for this but you should have one for your bank account.
Take your dilekçe to the offices next to the "cafe pengun" 200m down from the post office with it on your left.
Go in, turn left walk along turn right up the stairs turn left you will see two door, knock and go in the door on the right the person will stamp and sign your dilekçe.
Go over the road to the police station opposite the post office go to the window on the ground floor and they will sign and stamp your dilekçe too.
You no longer need to pay money for the kimlik book at the post office you pay when you hand in your paperwork to the passport police 138tl.
Gather all that it says on the dilekçe noting that your rental agreement needs to be in Turkish if you are using one. They will give you two forms to fill out that need to be type not hand written you can take them across the road to the Captain licence and shipping and they will type them up for you they do actually have some of the forms in the shop, the cost for this is 10tl, don't forget to sign the forms in the bottom right corner.
Take everything back to the passport police in a clear folder you can buy the ones they use at Eray Kıtasiye this shop is on the same side of the road as the post office but further on as you approach the Tuesday Market area, just ask for passport buraue folder and he will sell you one.
Remember to ask for a signed copy of your passport to use as official id when you hand in your documents.
From this stage it should take around 6-8 weeks, if you need it quicker then you have to go to Muğla.
I hope you find this useful, I have not put a time as I did it at my own pace but I would say that it is easily possible to do in a day.
* Went today 16/08/2010 the payment is now on the ground floor, go to the person on the left first then on the right to pay.

wow thats thorough but much more complicated than it is in Bodrum, plus they give you your passport back and just ask you to sign a form saying you will not leave Turkey until your application is processed, all forms can be completed by hand and no folders etc required, also we do not have to go to the tax office to pay, it can be paid at Ziraat bank (well all of this was the process 18 months ago, could all have changed of course) and you pick your Ikamet up 10 days later

The different places are not too far apart and if you do the registration prior then that's a few hours saved. The biggest problem was I had to buy a second tee shirt to soak up the sweat coming through the first.
I will say though if you have no Turkish language at all you will struggle.

I am glad you dated this very usefull information, from my own experience, the process changes every year. Must admit our Polis chap in Ortaca does a lot of this work himself so it is a little less complicated, I find a big smile and a friendly manner goes a long way to soothing the process.

Re: Process for 1st time residency in Fethiye as of 30th July 2010
I very much doubt you will have much luck continuing your work here, a work permit will almost certainly be needed and they are almost impossible to get, regardless of profession, qualifications or expertise.
If a Turkish person can do the job then you won't get a permit to work, however there are, I'm told a few English nurses working in the private hospitals although whether they have work permits I do not know.
