Of a tractor ride home.

The Old Groaner

In the middle of last week we had occasion to scrounge a lift home from our nearest town. We hadn't done so for a while but we assumed that the normal pick-up points would be unchanged so walked with our shopping to the appropriate corner shop and waited. Sure enough after only about fifteen minutes along growled Mustafa Taxi's son Achmet on his ancient Ford tractor.

Re: Of a tractor ride home.

I can relate to that, though round here the locals love their 'Pat Pats' which are really Lombardini diesel engine rotivators with wheels and a chassis and trailer fitted. Electric start is optional.

Re: Of a tractor ride home.

I can also relate to that one.

Back in 1971 after having worked 12 months in Israel, my friend and I were, slowly, slowly, hitching our way back to Britain.

Many a time, we were given a lift by tractor. We had no Turkish, the farmers had no English and often if it was late afternoon the farmer would take us home with him.

We'd be fed, given a matress on the floor for the night, breakfasted in the morning and then taken back to the 'main' road to continue our journey.

Going through Greece was much the same but once we were in Italy we were lucky enough to get some super rides and really started to put some distance behind us.

Some dodgy moments here and there but, overall, great memories.

Re: Of a tractor ride home.

I thought Turkish tractors were only used to take the men to the tea house and back

Ha ha Ibrahim Abi, they are used for everything down this way!
As an aside, the practise of using rocks as brakes doesn't stop with tractors. Our many visitors from (mainly) Istanbul, with their new, modern cars, still use this method to ensure their parked vehicles don't run away. You can take the man from the village, but not the village from the man!

Brought back memories of my old uncle in Lancashire back in the 70s. He had a 'new' tractor (20 years old, and the old tractor (still had metal seat). As soon as he parked he would shout 'Scotch that wheel' meaning put a stone in front in case the brakes failed.

Dammit, that would have been a good title for this---"Scotch that wheel!"
