Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

Does anyone know a seller of vanilla pods in Fethiye area? I want to make my own vanilla extract, but on-line prices are very high, which I understand, but if I am paying 20TL a pod I would like to see what I am buying.

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

There are a few places near you that sell them = 1. In the Pork shop past the big Migros heading towards Calis. Vaccum packed in 6's but can separate at 3 TL each. 2. They also sell these in the pork shop near Tansas for 3 TL each. 3. The spice shop near the fish market has them in, first one on the right as you enter the market area next door to the kebab shop. 4. Also, on the spice stalls in the "everyday" fruit and veg market. Although you should make sure you don't mistake carob pods for them. x Angela in Side x

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

I am tempted to ask which shelf they are on in the respective shops. You have a remarkable knowledge on the subject - are you a user? If so, do you have an opinion on which is best - quality, not price. My research tells me to try for Madagascan Pods; will I get a choice in the shops you list?

On the alcohol to steep them in, vodka or bourbon seem to be the favourites. Any views?

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

The spice shop will be Sister's Place, Ian, but you could also try the one opposite.

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

Ah ha Immac ... my secret is out ... I simply Googled the answers I have given you as they were put on various websites in answer to similar questions to yours and in your area. We actually live in Side which is miles away and I have never shopped in your area at all, although we did stay for 2 weeks in Olu Deniz 2 months ago and visited Fethiye and Calis then. I did the paragliding jump from the top of the mountain ... it's twice the height of Mount Snowden, as you probably already know. I was floating about up there for half-an-hour - - with the guide attached to me of course - - and landed on the beach just by the bar that my partner Mike was in, enjoying one of his roll up cigarettes and an Efes! It cost 50 Euros for the experience but it is one I will never forget ... fabulous ...

To answer your question about which is the best type of vanilla pod... Yes, I Googled again! and got this answer for you = The "best" variety depends on your personal preference in flavor. Madagascar is the most popular type and Indian is a consistent favourite. Each type is slightly different:

Madagascar Vanilla - rich and creamy
Mexican Vanilla - bold, dark, smokey
Indian Vanilla - full, chocolate
Indonesian Vanilla - mild, well balanced
Tahitian Vanilla - floral, cherry-chocolate
Tonga Vanilla - earthy, fig, raisin

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

Your information was OK, but out of date. I did the rounds this morning and ended up in the central market. Only two stores had stock, and each was selling at 20TL a pod. So, if you trust it, slightly cheaper on Gittigidiyor - but you canīt pick and choose on-line as you can face-to-face.
So the days of 3TL per pod seem to be long gone.
Anyway, thanks for the information, and I am now set to make my own vanilla extract.

Re: Vanilla Pods in Fethiye?

I keep a vanilla pod in a jar of sugar in order to infuse dishes with vanilla flavour . I have no idea as to it's provenance but it tasted of vanilla to me .

A chef friend told me pods are wasted by being cooked with , they last for years if stored properly . My pod is over 10 years of age and is still working . If used in alcohol they can be topped up forever or dried and re used in a subsequent bottle of the same spirit.

Enjoy

Vanilla is near the top of the list of rapidly increasing prices for those sorts of things...
