Fly Fishing gear
I'm looking for a shop, within reasonable travel distance of Fethiye, that has a good selection of Fly Fishing gear - including rods.
Also, any information on good fishing spots between Antalya and Mugla?

Not asking much Ian!
Living in Turkey can have its downsides and this highlights one of them.
In the UK, we take for granted the fact that we can usually find a shop specialising in almost anything.
The few tackle shops I do know of in and around Turkey cater purely for the budget fisherman. (The bamboo stick and safety pin brigade).
Any quality branded tackle is usually sourced outside of Turkey and imported privately. This being the case for many of the specialised Angling Boats that operate out of Antalya.
One thought did spring to mind. I have tried the Abu Garcia website Here but cannot get the page to load. I do remember that their paper catalogue used to list affiliate dealers around the world, maybe you will get lucky and find one in Turkey, but its probably not going to be a dolmus ride from Fethiye Ian.
Failing this, I can only recommend you research what you want on the net and get a buddy to bring the gear over.
Good luck!
Merv!

Re: Fly Fishing gear
Hi Ian, I am a keen fly angler and have searched lots of sites re fly fishing in Turkey but have come up with nothing!!!
My apartment is in Side and I found a shop in nearby town of Manavgat, but only spinning and sea. The owner new about flyfishing but did not sell fly tackle, he showed me his licence [must have] for the rivers. I dont now about fly in the sea.
If you find anything please ley me know.
Kind regards Phil

Re: Fly Fishing gear
Philogic: I write the Fishing section of http://www.fethiyetimes.com/cms/ Have a look in the Outdoor section for information about some of the fishing around Fethiye.
As Merv has suggested I have brought stuff over and even imported things from USA. Fly fishing does not seem to be big amongst the locals so I guess in relation to equipment it's the old refrain "There's no call for it!" the obvious response being "I'm calling for it!".
I was hoping to find that there was a little shop tucked away somewhere that would have everything I need, but we will see what this thread gives.
The shipping costs from USA are high and there is the risk of being charged import duty, although, so far, they have not done that. At the moment I have enough of the big gear (rods and waders) and it is the consumables that I am looking for like lines, flies etc.
I need one more rod and there is no way to buy that without holding it in your hand.
A number of people who holiday out here have contacted me to join in on fishing trips and they look for kit out here to avoid having to bring things over.
As Merv says, we are spoilt in UK with specialist shops and expect a choice in everything we buy. Out here you sometimes have to take what you can get and be grateful for it.

Ian if theres enough demand from like minded people living here, then I am sure we can arrange a new forum to discuss fishing in Turkey, tips and tricks etc.

Re: Fly Fishing gear
Lorraine: A bag of oranges is a lot more than I come back with on some of my trips!
I know the shop you are talking about, and the English speaking owner. He has some Fly things but not a wide range. I'm due to interview him for a Fethiye Times piece in the next few weeks. He has a huge variety of sea fishing stuff, including spoons!
Gordon will have experienced, no doubt, that a lot of the rivers have been spoilt by aggressive fishing tactics, including the use of poison and dynamite to extract fish. The same is true, I am told, of tracts of the seabed around Fethiye.

Re: Fly Fishing gear
Trev - The Dalaman river is good fishing although when I was last there in the winter we were catching Bream on fly. There were Trout there because local kids were netting them(!) but we could not get them on fly.
That river - I have only fished it inland within 5 miles of the sea - as far as where it is crossed by the main Mugla road. It does go up into the mountains very soon after that and I am told it is very much like British mountain streams. It will not be high now but the river is big enough to give you fishing at this time of the year.
We were fishing it at the bridge on the Sarigerme road - nice deep pools with some rapids - good place for you to start.
You may want to try the river and lake Koycegiz - big river runs from the lake to sea - perhaps hire a boat in Dalyan and do the stretch. There are some very big Mirror Carp in that lake.
On the far side of that lake - northern side - there are two rivers/streams I have promised myself a trip to, they look very interesting.
If you plan to cross the mountain towards Fethiye area, the best river is the Esen which runs into the sea at Patara. This again gives good fishing through the year and I can give you chapter and verse on the sites.
Bring whatever you need as you are not likely to find it here.
Ian

Re: Fly Fishing gear
It's well worth looking for this sort of thing on Ebay. The postage costs shouldn't be too expensive.
