Help please! What was it?

I was recently on holiday in kusadasi and a family member had claimed to be stung whilst in water about a foot deep next to the shore, he was stung on the ankle and it looked like a rash.
When walking down the peir 30 minutes later we saw a snake like fish with a near transparent body like a jellyfish slithering just under the surface can anybody give me some information on what could have stung him and what that snake like fish could have been? The injury cleared up withing 20 minutes and had no lasting effects.

Re: Help please! What was it?

The sting sounds very much like that of the Weaver fish (also spelt Weever) and can even be found in the shallows in the UK when warm.
The weaver family are a tropical and subtropical species of fish, often found near the shoreline where they lay on the bottom or sometimes cover themselves with a layer of sand to hid from their prey.. they have a row of spines on the dorsal fin, (similar to a perch), these sharp spines can puncture the skin and inject a toxin, in the main it is not serious to mr average unless it becomes infected, it will however cause some degree of pain and swelling, most dangerous to those with heart/kidney/liver problems or fish type allergies.

best treatment is to immerse affected area in a bucket/bowl of water as hot as you can tolerate (not boiling your foot though!).
You may hear that urinating on the area also helps, as a former lifeguard i can reveal that this really does not offer much in the way of relief to the victim but is of great amusement to onlookers

There have been reports of poisonous seaweed around the Torba area and up as far as guvercinlik.

Re: Help please! What was it?

The rash part of this sounds more like a Sea Anemone sting, I have been stung a couple of times while in shallow water on my stomach and thighs when brushing past them. As you say it leaves a short lived rash from the many tentacles.
I think the fish was unconnected as it sounds like Needle Fish, like Gerald described.
