Skippers License ?

We've just been looking at a boat for sale and wonder if a skippers license is needed? it's 5.9 meters long with a 90hp engine. its already been registered etc and i believe you need to re register it every year but it costs nothing ? we only want to use it to visit the local little coves and beaches so won't be taking it out to sea at all. Any help would be well appreciated ...Thanks

Re: Skippers License ?

my belief is that anything over 5m is a problem in that you need a
registered captain.

Re: Skippers License ?

I think a cert of competence is enough as you are not using it for a business, re register every year is free.

Re: Skippers License ?

Hi Fuzzy,
The simplest way would probably be to register the boat in the UK under the SSR (Small Ships Registry). As a British registered boat, Turkey will accept that your British qualifications to skipper her in British waters will also be valid in Turkey. You would not need any formal qualifications to skipper your boat in Britain, so neither will you in Turkey. However, as we all know, different officials sometimes have different interpretations of rules and regulations, so it could be a good idea to have an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or similar to be safe.
SSR registration can be done on line, and costs from memory 25 for 5 years, but you do have to have a residence in the uk.
For Turkish registration, I know nothing, only that I was strongly advised against by everyone I spoke to, as being complicated and expensive. Also, I don’t know if Turkey would require some sort of skippering qualification, even for non-commercial use.
I think you will also have to have a transit log, renewable annually, although there may be a minimum length below which it isn’t necessary. (In our case – 10 m length - it is certainly mandatory.)

UK has no requirement but Turkey requires UK citizens to have a minimum of an ICC on boats over 7m I think or having engines the size of yours. You cannot buy a Turkish flagged boat unless you have a Residency Permit
