round and about Gazipaşa

There is more to Gazipaşa than the airport although that seems to be the only thing that ever gets a mention here
So lets have a look around.
Gazipaşa is about 45 kilometres from Alanya on a winding road that has some great views..and also goes through the ancient town of İotape..or Aytap as its now called in Turkish. The ruins lie on either side of the road and many tumble down to the sea. İotape is set around a little secluded cove with a fairly good beach. A nice place to get away from the crowds in summer and can be reached both from the main road or by sea.

Although i feel that Gazipaşa needs tidying up especially the long road from the centre down to the beach area there is still a lot of natural charm to this little agricultural town. The town centre is unremarkable when it comes to historical buildings or special architechture...even so it has a nice feel, some good little shops and people are really hospitable. There is a weekly market with some good bargains and many people from Alanya take the bus down on a Tuesday
We were down there last Sunday and the place was brimming with families having their weekly picnic in the Belediye park There is something special about the smell of meat being cooked in the open air and barbies were all well alight when we got there.
Although if you prefer somebody else to do the work there are some nice little restaurants all along the strand...and everywhere was full.
The beach has patches of good sand and patches of large rocks and flat slabs..at one time the massive flat slabs on Koru Denizi were cut and used for millstones and also they have been used in different old buildings
There were not many braving a dip in the sea on Sunday although there were the usual fishing fraternity at the waters edge hoping for a catch.
From the beach area you can see the castle of Selenius perched right on top of the hill and the long protective castle walls snaking up through the scrub on the hillside. They say there are some good steps up the hill to get to the castle and the views from there are spectacular..as you can see from the many photos from the site.
İf you enjoy searching for and exploring antique cities the area around Gazipaşa will delight you...although you need a car..and for many preferably a jeep as some are difficult to get to.
To name a few ...Adanda-Lamos Nephelis Antiocheia Adcragum

İt has to be said that many ruins lie hidden among the banana plantations which are a famous feature of this part of Turkey.
From Alanya to Anamur the climate is mild enough for bananas to grow..the only area in Turkey where this is possible. Although the bananas are small they are sweet and also good for cooking..banana cake is really nice using these little beauties.
There are so many more places to see around Gazipaşa but maybe our local experts Andy and Jill will fill in the gaps for me.

A friend took myself & hubby to Gazipasa in September about 3 years ago with had lunch at a restaurant on the beach the food was wonderful, but I found the place to be eerily quite everwhere.

Re: round and about Gazipaşa

What's the best place to have a base on holiday to explore these areas, for instance if I wanted to spend a week to see as much of that region where should I look for a hotel?

Re: round and about Gazipaşa

there isthe Selinus Hotel near the beach in Gazipaşa
However if you are exploring by car i think some of the hotels in Kargıcak are a better bet and from there you can see the Toros mountains above Alanya as well as some great antique cities in and around Mahmutlar.
With your own transport you could drive to Anamur takes about 2 hours on a road with some of the best views in Turkey.
