re: Linux mint 16
Hi Christella, I am a mint 16 user and have been using Linux for about three years now.
To help I need to know whether you have loaded Mint alongside Windows as a dual boot system or loaded it as the only operating system on your computer and which version of mint 16 - is it the Cinnamon version, Mate, KDE or Xfce?
Which program do you wish to download? There are a lot of programs already installed, if you click on "menu" you will see the categories and when you hover your mouse over the category name all the program (application) names in that category will be shown. The names are different to the Windows name so a certain amount of learning is involved in this step.
I've never heard of anyone getting adverts, is this while running Mint? Could you explain exactly what is happening please and where you downloaded Mint from.
Lastly, remember that you can always download the Mint User Guide from this page LINK

re: Linux mint 16
I too run mint ( xfce ) and have done so for a number of years. Have never had adverts.
I use the programme update from the sytem folder. Let it check the repository , and only update small batches otherwise it can lock your system.
Chris give excellent advice above , try to provide the info he requested.
Steve.

re: Linux mint 16
Okay. You say it is your old computer, by that I assume you have a newer one? If so using your new computer export your bookmarks to a file and save it on a usb memory stick then with the memory stick in your old computer import the bookmark file into your browser.
Expat Shield doesn't work with Linux. There are alternatives, the one that I use is FreeVPN.
Can you explain more about "being bombarded with adverts" because I don't understand this. Where are the adverts coming from, what are they advertising and where to do you see them (what site)
Okay just seen your last post, yes that helps me understand what you have.

Oh I see, my browser is Firefox and I use Adblock so I very rarely see adverts on websites and never see them on here at all.

Right, I have never used an IPad or any other Apple device for that matter so I don't know how they work but I assume you can find a way of exporting your bookmarks. If it doesn't have a USB port that you can put a memory stick into then you might have to attach the exported file to an email, send it to another email address of yours and then open the email in your old computer to download the file.
