Microsoft security scam

I havent had a phone call from these fake Microsoft security companies for a couple of years now, usually from India.
Anyhow the last couple of days my internet connection has been intermittent (virgin) on checking their website it is a known problem which should be sorted by this morning.
Then the phone calls start from the fake security companies wanting me to access my PC as I have "a security risk" , kept him going for 20 minutes then said I had Linux which p........ him off.
It occurred to me that these scam calls are most likely following the status reports for providers by post code and then targetting that post code.

The timing of this if you didnt know better could catch many out as it coincides with known server issues.

Re: Microsoft security scam

I like the ones for car accidents, I can usually keep them going for about 15 minutes with explaining how my broken ankle has not set correctly and I am still walking with a bit of a limp, at some point I manage to ask where to send all the taxi receipts for hospital visits to get a interim payment which usually means they have to go and ask their supervisor, but eventually or when I have had enough I ask if the 'Council' always pay out, which again usually means they ask for clarification then I let slip how I broke my ankle tripping on the pavement a few years ago, needless to say they soon hang up after that.

They know car insurance companies nowadays just pay out as it's cheaper in the long run than disputing the accident, which is why there are so many accident insurance callers out there.

Re: Microsoft security scam

My answer-phone is now left turned on permanently and the message says 'If you start talking and if I'm here I will probably pick up, or just leave a message' and the best thing is because they hang up almost straight away I don't have to go to the trouble of listening to the answer machine.

Even if they were genuine Microsoft why would they want to talk to anyone with a apple or Linux, so obviously even MS would hang up, but as we know 'or should' MS do not phone people.
