Turkish Database Theft

Guardian reports theft and publication of "A database posted online allegedly contains the personal information of 49 million people on the Turkish citizenship database, potentially making more than half of the population of the country vulnerable to identity theft and massive privacy violations."

Extract: "Turkey’s national ID number system is used to enable access to a number of government services, like taxation, voting, education, social security, health care, and military recruitment. It is also used to verify identity in other cases where security is necessary, such as banking.

On top of the risks of having ID numbers made public, Turks on the database also face the prospect of identity theft purely using the personal information contained within the database.ns."

Full: Database allegedly containing ID numbers of 50m Turks posted online | Technology | The Guardian

This probably includes anyone with a Residence Permit, I would guess.

Re: Turkish Database Theft

Unsubstantiated as yet. Let's not panic, unless they can link our numbers to our Panama accounts.

Re: Turkish Database Theft

Turkish minister calls massive data leak report an ?old story? - LOCAL

Reports of a fresh data leak began circulating early April 5 after the Associated Press released a report on hackers who posted a database online which included the personal information of nearly 50 million Turkish citizens, describing the incident “one of the largest leaks of its kind.”

“The Associated Press on April 4 was able to partially verify the authenticity of the leak by running 10 non-public Turkish ID numbers against names contained in the dump. Eight were a match,” the agency said, adding entries included data such as national ID numbers, addresses, birthdates and parents’ names.

Turkey is claiming it's an old story, but the international press are running with it and seem to have verified it's credibility in some way.

Re: Turkish Database Theft

Luckily my immediate family are not included and unfortunately I doubt the Turkish authorities will do much about it other than ensure their own protection.
