Security Features to Look for in New Laptops
by James Martin - Mar 16, 2016
"look for business notebooks that include integrated hardware security features, such as:
* Preboot authentication...let users and administrators configure password protection in the system’s BIOS setup.
* Hard drive password protection.
* Self-encrypting drives (SEDs...perform encryption much more quickly than software-based encryption, among other benefits.
* Secure data removal...BIOS-level data destruction tools

3 Laptop Security and Privacy Risks Users May Not Know About
by James Martin Apr 28, 2016

Little-Known Risk No. 1: Laptop Webcam Spying
Little-Known Risk No. 2: Discontinued Software Programs and Utilities
Little-Known Risk No. 3: Dodgy USB Drives

"Nearly half the people who picked up a USB stick found in a parking lot plugged the drive into their computers, according to recent research conducted by Google, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Michigan. The problem is, USB sticks and drives are notorious for harboring Trojan horses and other malware."

REMEMBER: practice safe computing, never put an unsafe stick into a clean port.

Why Software Security for Laptops Isn’t Enough
by James Martin May 05, 2016

"Rising security threats + vulnerable laptops = potential data risk disaster. Here’s why you need hardware as well as software security."

Users Don’t Always Follow the Rules Gasp! Not possible (is it?)

"But even the most effective aftermarket security software won’t protect laptops when users don’t follow basic security protocols. Employees who connect to insecure public hot spots, click on unauthorized or questionable email attachments, visit questionable websites, or try to “outsmart” IT by using their own devices or cloud services can make your company more vulnerable to security risks."

"No surprise, then, that IDC research also shows that the top security risk identified by IT is that employees “underestimate the importance of following security policy.”

Not so safe: Security software can put computers at risk
"Concordia University research reveals pitfalls of antivirus programs and parental controls"
Date: May 4, 2016

Summary:
"Is the antivirus program running on your computer really making your computers safer to use, say, for online banking? Is the parental control software you bought to keep your child off inappropriate sites transparent for the overall safety of your computer? New research shows security software might actually make online computing less safe."

"Time and again, the researchers found that these programs were doing more harm than good."

"At the root of the problem is how security applications act as gatekeepers, filtering dangerous or unwanted elements by inspecting secure web pages before they reach the browser."

"security products make the computer "think" that they are themselves a fully entitled CA, thus allowing them to fool browsers into trusting any certificate issued by the products."

"We encourage consumers to keep their browser, operating system and other applications up-to-date, so that they benefit from the latest security patches,"

Re: Windows 10 Free Ending-Security Info

So, do I assume that it will be okay to upgrade my laptop from 8.1 to 10 now? Have all the "problems" associated with a new release been ironed out?

Sorry - I am not exactly asking for advice, rather that I didn't want to do this initially as I wasn't sure of the outcome.

Re: Windows 10 Free Ending-Security Info

Soon a Windows 10 Anniversary Update will be released with new features apparently, it was slated for summer but the preview edition has parts of it already. Will it come with bugs? Who knows?

I take it that this will only work if you have changed to Windows 10 already? Or will this be incorporated when you swap to Windows 10 after the release?

Re: Windows 10 Free Ending-Security Info

Just downloaded it yesterday but the data usage is showing 23gb over last 4 weeks and I cannot see a way to reset it to zero, I could on Windows 8. Am I missing something? Been into the settings but can't find anything to reset.

Maisie
It depends when you change, as ME points out the freebie upgrade is getting near the end of it's life so if you upgrade now Windows will auto update you when it is released.
