SAT NAV on your Phone

Hi Guys

Came across this app while looking for a replacement Sat Nav for a friend who had his swiped.

I like the idea of this and I am wondering has anyone installed or used this app or something similar they could recommend.....I use a Garmin Nuvi with Lifetime Updates and maps UK & Ireland

Here is the link.....https://www.navigon.com/en/mobile-app/

Re: SAT NAV on your Phone

That looks very interesting. One factor I could not see any detail about is how much memory it takes up on a phone.
The feature which allows off line access, states: "NAVIGATE WITHOUT AN INTERNET CONNECTION. With NAVIGON your maps are always there." This could mean that a sizeable chunk of space is being inhabited and doing nothing. Nothing is said about this.

Re: SAT NAV on your Phone

I have only ever used the 'HERE MAPS' on both my Samsung android and also Nokia Windows phone and found although just slightly different setup both have worked perfectly well apart from one instance in Morocco when I forgot the map didn't at that time have a walking mode so kept diverting me the long way around the road but did eventually get me back to the hotel.
AS for working of-line then providing you download the required map then they will work apart from traffic updates perfectly well. In fact i used to swear by my TomTom of which I very rarely use at all now unless going on a long car journey, mainly because yes I still feel more confident plus the car cradle is better than the phone holder
Depending on which map you use they are in the region of about 200+MB, but again having them stored on a 128GB SD card is not a problem and now slowing down.
So far the maps have been used with success in:
Turkey, altinkum
Egypt, Sharm el sheikh
Morocco, Marrakesh
and the good old UK, nationwide.

With one of the benefits being able to use bluetooth headset for instructions instead of constantly having to monitor the screen, although in walking mode you might have to walk a small distance before getting a update to know if you are definatley walking in the correct direction.

Now with the latest version they even have bus route and time table which is also brilliant for the odd occasion I catch a bus into town.

Re: SAT NAV on your Phone

We used the Google Maps app to go to Goc office in Muğla a couple of weeks ago. I have a Samsung Tablet. I set up the journey... Gümüşkaya to Goc office Mügla before I left the house and pressed start as we got in the car. A nice lady talked me through the whole journey, door to door without a hitch. I then selected reverse as we left the Goc office carpark and she talked us home. All off-line. Brilliant.

GPS Voice Navigation (Windows Phone) | Melon Mobile
Which is ok providing you have a data connection which is obviously a ongoing charge for the time the app will be working.
WE tight people do not like paying for on-line data and especially at maybe £3 -6 per mb whilst in Turkey that would be a NO NO.
