Re: Missing Websites

I have been looking in Google. Instructions are there for a system restore. It sounds easy but is this necessary? Except that it talks about logging on with administrator credentials. Now I am getting worried, not difficult I agree when talking about computers. If I end up having to do this, what will this do exactly?

Re: Missing Websites

Hi Masie, a lot of sites are currently not available due to the new EU regs on GDPR, some companies are temporarily pulling some sites because heavy fines can be applied for non-compliance, not being able to access some sites may be because of this.

"The GDPR imposes significant costs and massive legal risks on firms processing personal data. It is complex, and firms need to hire people with considerable expertise to ensure they comply with it, because they face heavy fines for breaking the regulation’s myriad rules.

As a result, several firms inside and outside Europe are already suspending some digital services, such as by shutting down particular features, blocking access from Europe, or pulling out of the European market altogether. For example, the Czech online platform Seznam has announced it will shut down its social network for classmates, while Gravity Interactive, a U.S. games developer, will block European users from accessing its games."

Re: Missing Websites

Tintagel: I don't think this has anything to do with the new regulations. Up to and including yesterday I could access all the sites. Today I can't, although I can access all of them on this laptop.

Re: Missing Websites

Juco: thanks for that. However, I am puzzled as to what this will do. Will it show up anything that is wrong with my computer? Am I supposed to be looking for something to correct?

Sorry, but I am a complete dumbo. My head is only just above the water!

Re: Missing Websites

Its a safe mode that just runs essential programmes. All you are looking for is to see if it runs better, in fact it is good to run virus checks in safe mode.

Quote:
Safe Mode Options

There are actually three different Safe Mode options available. Deciding which Safe Mode option to use depends on the problem you're having.

Here are descriptions of all three and when to use which:

Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts Windows with the absolute minimum drivers and services that are possible to start the operating system.

Choose Safe Mode if you can't access Windows normally and you do not expect to need access to the internet or your local network.

Safe Mode with Networking

Safe Mode with Networking starts Windows with the same set of drivers and services as Safe Mode but also includes those necessary for the networking services to function.

Choose Safe Mode with Networking for the same reasons you'd chose Safe Mode but when you do expect to need access to your network or the internet.

This Safe Mode option is often used when Windows won't start and you suspect you'll need access to the internet to download drivers, follow a troubleshooting guide, etc.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Safe Mode with Command Prompt is identical to Safe Mode except that Command Prompt is loaded as the default user interface instead of Explorer.

Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt if you've tried Safe Mode but the taskbar, Start screen, or Desktop doesn't load properly.
Other Types of Safe Mode

Like mentioned above, Safe Mode is usually the term for starting any program in a mode that uses default settings, for the purpose of diagnosing what could be causing problems. It functions much like Safe Mode in Windows.

The idea is that when the program starts with its default settings only, it's more likely to start without issues and let you further troubleshoot the problem.

What typically happens is that once the program begins without loading custom settings, modifications, add-ons, extensions, etc., you can enable things one-by-one and then keep starting the application like that so that you can find the culprit.

Re: Missing Websites

If you are running on XP, i's wide open to hackings as Microsoft have dropped all security updates. Save all your personal files on to USB's or an independent hard drive download windows 10.
