Re: Missing Websites

Now I am even more confused! Three options? Which one do I choose? From the descriptions it seems I will be looking for something wrong. Doesn't this presuppose that I know what I am looking at.

Windows 10? Wash your mouth out with soap! I have enough problems at the moment. However, having said that I don't think I have anything personal in Windows XP. If I did, where would it be? Are the saved emails in Hotmail/Outlook classed as personal?

I do have a fair bit in Word and Excel. Would these programmes be affected by putting in a different operating system? Everything in these two is saved to an external drive.

Not necessarily what it does is allow you to use your PC at a more basic level with only the important programmes loading. if the PC works better then it would give you reason to believe that some of your `other` programmes are the culprit. Worry about indentifying them as the next stage.

P.S.
When you reboot the computer it will start in normal mode.

Re: Missing Websites

Please forgive my stupidity here! When we are talking about programmes - what does this mean exactly? When I turn on my computer, I load the internet from a Chrome button I have on my desktop. Once this loads, I then click on the various tabs across the top (these are marked Apps). I usually have several of these open at one time so that I can jump from one to another.

This is where the problems are occurring. For example, I have a tab for eBay Watch List. The page loads - but with no details. The tab for eBay Purchases loads the page and the details. The tab for Sainsburys Bank gives me a blank page, with the shield at the end of the line (as previously mentioned) telling me that I am trying to open unauthenticated scripts.

This forum will not load at all. Just a blank page with the circle going round. Ditto StandardLifeAberdeen (hubby has a few shares and I track the price for him daily). Nationwide and Barclays are okay and load correctly. Outlook loads, but is incomplete as parts won't work (can't get Options to load), also emails won't open, although they are there.

I also have a free daily lottery based on my postcode. This works fine for checking.

Looking at Programmes through the start button at the bottom of the desktop screen, there are many, many shown. However, the only ones I actually recognise are AVG, CCleaner, SUPERAntiSpyware, Chrome Apps, Excel, Word and Adobe Reader. For example - what is Microsoft Silverlight? Microsoft PowerPoint? Windows Movie Maker?

Would throwing the computer out of the window help?

Basically everything your computer does not need to run.

If you boot in safe mode as per below then type in the web address for Turkish Living and see if it loads ok. Then log out and type in your ebay one and see if the ebay watch list loads.
It could be you are trying to load too many programmes at once and a lack of memory.

Re: Missing Websites

With a great deal of trepidation - I just tried to open my computer in Safe Mode. At the first screen to appear, I kept pressing F8. What appeared was a blue square containing the following :-

Hitachi HDP725025 GLAT 80
HL-DT-ST GCE-8160B
TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-H552D
1st Floppy Drive

Under this was the instruction to use the up and down arrow keys to choose. It also contained the information that ESC should take me back to opening XP. I clicked ESC.

What are these options, and which do I choose?

Beam me up Scottie!

Re: Missing Websites

Try this:

Quote:
If you have not done it before, it may need trial and error to get it just right - try tapping the F8 key repeatedly about once every half a second, or faster, just after switching on the computer. It is too late if you do it after the computer starts to boot up, e.g. after the manufacturer's logo comes up.
