Re: VPN's

For watching TV I use Cactus Smart DNS as do a lot in this area. Smart DNS works in the background and only kicks in if you want to watch TV in UK or USA and it does so automatically in the background. VPNs for TV are getting to be old hat. They do a free trial https://www.cactusvpn.com/free-smart-dns-trial/ for 7 days.

Re: VPN's

DIY VPN to your house back home.

I've just cracked making a free VPN to my home network in the UK and thought I'd share the info. It's nothing new but I haven't seen it discussed here. A while back I bought a NAS (a box containing hard disks that you connect to your router) so that I could access my files from any device anywhere. Today I learnt how to use it as a VPN server, i.e. your very own Hotspot Shield. After finding a Youtube tutorial I set it up in about an hour.

The good stuff:
My UK IP address is not a known VPN address so it isn't blocked.
My phone or laptop appears as a device on my LAN so I can connect to websites as if from the UK without being detected by the TV companies. But interestingly I found that I can do things like use my remote TV app to record TV programs on my Humax DVR in the UK and play them back just as if I were at home.

You need:
A house outside Turkey with a fast internet connection.
A network drive (NAS) with VPN capability attached to the router. I use a Synology DS718+. You could use a spare PC with server software instead but I haven't tried it.
A free OpenVPN app for phone or PC in Turkey.
It works with both UDP protocol (easily detected) and TCP (not so easily detected).
I haven't tried it in Turkey yet!

From Turkey I can not access my Express VPN account or Web site without a VPN. Turkey does not like VPNs
