How To Upgrade To Windows 10 For ‘Free’ In 2020

Windows 10 still has problems but Windows 7 is about to hit the scrap heap (and Windows 8 is a pointless sideways move). As such, millions of users must soon jump to Windows 10 for the safety of their data and Microsoft charges $139 for the standard edition. But what if I told you there’s a legal way you can still upgrade for free?

Yes, this is no joke. Despite Microsoft ending its free Windows 10 upgrade offer to all users on July 30, 2016, the company has (in my opinion, knowingly) left open a loophole. There’s just one snag: you will need a legal copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 to do this.

Tip: if you don’t have one, you can buy a legal copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 at third part retailers for a fraction of the cost of a Windows 10 licence. Home licences update to Windows 10 Home, Pro licences update to Windows 10 Pro, so choose carefully.

With that caveat out the way, here’s how you get your Windows 10 free upgrade:

Click on the Windows 10 download page link here
Click 'Download Tool now' - this downloads the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
When finished, open the download and accept the license terms
Choose: 'Upgrade this PC now' then click ‘Next’
Choose ‘Keep personal files and apps’
Click ‘Install’ (note this takes some time and involves multiple restarts)
Once installed, open: Settings > Windows Update > Activation to activate your Windows 10 digital license...
OR enter your (genuine) Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key if you haven’t previously activated your old version of Windows
If you’d like to check your licence has successfully been activated afterwards, open: Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

Note: a Windows 10 licence is tied to your hardware. As such, if you need to format your computer for any reason Windows 10 will reactivate automatically.

Tip: if you change multiple components in your PC as part of a device upgrade, Windows 10 make mistakenly think you’ve bought a new PC and refuse to register the licence automatically. Thankfully, Microsoft has a simple process you can follow if that happens.

I had one PC that wasn't capable of being upgraded to Win 10, can't remember why but suspect the motherboard/processor wasn't up to it.

Me? I am not advising anyone to do anything, you can run on Windows 3 for all I care.

If someone wants to take advantage of upgrading to Windows 10 it is up to them, a personal choice.

Windows runs as a service by the way and upgrades itself.

Unless you have minimum 2GB memory and a decent processor I would not do anything or it may run like a slug.

Bit gruff in post#4 Norm, there are plenty of people who are listening to you.

Martin, your Samsung 7" wouldn't up grade to 10 but it is buzzing on 7. DELL have advice on their web site as to which of their computers can or can't be upgrated to 10. My other half has a DELL which is one that can't. The problem was with relation to the drivers that can't be down-loaded to the computer. I would suspect that all or most manufacturers would offer this service.

The one that wouldn't upgrade I ended up scrapping. It had a big alloy full size case which I felt wasn't worth upgrading it had 4GB ram so I guess the processor was the issue, I find W 10 to be pretty good and simple to use.

Re: How To Upgrade To Windows 10 For ‘Free’ In 2020

I got given an acer laptop from a friend of ours in the UK . Our daughter brought it over but when we turned it on, it just wouldn't connect to Google , try as we might , nothing worked, the google homepage came up, it had wifi connection but still would not open the page, it just froze

I ended up taking it into a local repair shop where he said he could reinstall windows, so as win 7 is being ditched I told him to put windows 10 on it
Got it back the day after, switched it on , got the Google page up, added Firefox and a few other things and just left it under the TV (Family was here so we went out a lot )

A week ago, Kath's I pad's touchscreen stopped working the i pad turned on but the touch sensor didn't work , so into the shop it went (Apparently there is a problem with the motherboard and if that cant be fixed it's either a new motherboard or another i pad)

Why is all this on a windows 10 thread you may ask ......Well, thought the acer laptop could be used until the i pad was either replaced or fixed

What a load of garbage windows 10 is (I know some people will disagree, but updating the laptop to windows 10 cause all kinds of problems)
Considering it is a fresh install , it is unbelieveably SLOW, the camera and mic don't work , neither does vertical scrolling (apparently all these problems were caused by updating to windows 10)
I spent around 4 hours yesterday trying to sort them all out without success (for example it says if you want to allow apps to access your camera , you have to allow them THERE IS NOWHERE TO INPUT FACEBOOK MESSENGER!)

When we get the i pad sorted , windows 7 will be reinstalled , my laptop is at least 3 times faster than the acer and a good few years older
