Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

The free upgrade from Win7 to Win10 officially ended in July 2016, but using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool, it has still been possible to upgrade for free. As of this month, Win7 is no longer supported with updates, so I wondered if the Media Creation Tool would still allow a free upgrade to Win10. Grabbed an older laptop with 'genuine' win7, downloaded the Media Creation Tool and ran it...yeh...upgraded to Win10.

The Microsoft site states 'To get started, you will first need to have a license to install Windows 10'....but apparently not !

Re: Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

I have read that Win 7 users will be vulnerable if they use it for online banking after the end of support.
Would this apply even with protection like Rapport or similar banking security in place?

Re: Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

In most cases you can use the old Windows 7 Key from your PC/Laptop to activate Windows 10

Re: Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

At the time of upgrade, there is an option to keep all files in the existing installation.

Re: Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

Just updated my (yalimart's) little Samsung NC10 netbook to Windows 10. Features that didn't work on Windows 7 seem to have come back to life. I guess there is a bit of work to do yet, bit like having a new computer.

Re: Win7 to Win10 upgrade.

lippy - just a suggestion, get yourself a USB external drive and transfer your music onto it, then try your upgrade. I'm in the UK but we got a Seagate 1TB drive for around £50.

I done a cheap version and took the hard drive out of an old virgin box thingy for the tv and use that as an external back up, the connection cables were around £6 on ebay.
