Wipe Win 7

Hi, I was going to pass on an old win 7 laptop and was intending to restore to factory settings first but as I dont have the disks finding it impossible. Looked onlıne and lots of links for intstructions to do with it without a disk but halfway through they tell you you need the disk or do partitioning .....looks a bit complicated for me. Can anyone recommend anything else please? wondering whether to just smash it up to prevent anyone else from taking it out of the bin. Ive had both my credit card details stolen and used in the last month so ı'm a bit anxıous to prevent anyone getting anything from it.

I would recommend putting Linux on it then, you can get Linux easily.

If you want to wipe the hard disk so all your personal info can not be recovered and you have access to a usb stick try
DBAN 2.3.0 (Darik's Boot and Nuke)
https://www.lifewire.com/dban-dariks...review-2619130
step by step instructions within the link
if you set it to run 7 times it can take approx 24 hours on a very slow machine depending on how large hard disk is

Re: Wipe win 7

A good distro of Linux I would currently recommend is Manjaro, but that is my personal opinion, others may recommend something just as good.

https://manjaro.org/

If you have a memory stick you could run it off that to start with and get the feel of Linux in action.

How to Erase a Hard Drive Using DBAN

Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN) is an entirely free data destruction program that you can use to completely erase all the files on a hard drive. This includes everything—every installed application, all your personal files, and even the operating system.

Whether you're selling a computer or just wanting to reinstall an OS from scratch, DBAN is the best tool of this type there is. The fact that it's free makes it all the better.

Because DBAN erases every single file on the drive, it has to run while the operating system isn't in use. To do this, you must "burn" the program to a disc (like an empty CD or DVD) or a USB device, and then run it from there, outside of the operating system, to completely erase the hard drive.

Re: Wipe Win 7

You have to use something to erase the hard disk, if you are using a program on the hard disk that you are using, then you are asking it to erase itself.

Unless the computer came with a recovery partition Windows 7 will at some point ask for a disk unfortunately, the fact it isn't giving you the option suggests you don't have a recovery partition.

If you are asking is there a way to delete everything just by clicking something in Windows 7 then the answer is no.

DBAN or GParted, as said, looks your best bet if you just want to delete it.

One other idea would be to give it to a school or whatever, but ask the IT teacher to delete it, then they could possibly have a use for it.
