Convert me do!

We all had a nice little ding dong recently over the rights and wrongs re meaties and veggies.
Now the dust has settled id like to ask the veggies to show us meaties the way, i hanker for a meat free day, not for health or moral reasons just for a different cuisine, bit like a takeaway night without the crispy beef.
So could you suggest any recipies we could try that, who knows, may tempt us from the belly rather than the soul to reduce our meat input [it bloody dear though innit?]
For me, recipes that arent meat substitutes but pukka veggie fodder are my no1
So, titter ye not, but convert us do.

Re: Convert me do!

My favourites, vegetable curry, beer stew (cooked in the pressure cooker) and pasta with a topping of Barbunya Pilaki (red beans in tomato sauce - from BIM) - yummy!

Re: Convert me do!

Hi Mollag, must of missed that thead.

Turkish food has a great selection of veggie dishes.
I like beans and rice, green beans in olive oil, dolma (either vine, pepper or cabbage leaf) veg casserole. Some simple lunchtime snacks that my hubby makes are finely chopped tomatoes with mixed herbs and melted cheese over Turkish torpedo bread (sliced length ways) it's like a mini pide and easy Turkish breakfast *add tomatoes, chillis, olive oil, mint and olives in a bowl and have it will crust bread and white cheese.

International inspired dishes for veggies that I like include creamy mushroom tagliatelle, cheesy potato bake (with baked beans, sorry can't help myself!) vegetable lasagne (keep tomatoes and add courgette, augergine and mushrooms) And any type of veg omlette you can imagine.

Actually there's loads of recipes! I wonder why I'm not a veggie??

Re: Convert me do!

I do a bulk from scratc ragu sauce and freeze it, it is good enough for pasta as it is--no meat, it just dont seem right without the meat though

Marksys did a veggy bake a few years ago, layered veggies baked in a white sauce, now that was nice.

Re: Convert me do!

Mollag, you can look up veggie dishes on the internet. If you are in the uk you can use quorn as a meat substitute, not found it out there in Turkey. I will try and post some recepies on here shortly but at the moment I am busy. A good book to look for is by Rose Elliot, we use a lot of beans especially red kidney beans. You could start with a Cauliflower cheese dish. Vegetable lasagnes using any veg or just layering veg and potatoes then adding a cheese sauce and baking in the oven. I have a fab recipe using baked beans and potatoes. I promise I'll post asap.

Lets not get back into this discussion again. The original thread was for some ideas for meals without eating meat! There does not have to be a reason other than wanting to try a 'non meat' meal.
