Question Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

hi, i wondered who has managed to do this & it taste nice one thawed..
i have done a bit of research online & read mixed reviews as to taste & outcome once thawed (of orange juice particularly). It seems lemon juice frozen/thawed is fine but orange juice not so.
anyone had any experience of this & what types of containers did they use or suggest i use.
i am squeezing on a daily basis but wondered if i should do the lot & freeze as the ones we have are ruining & despite giving some away we wanted to consider freezing methods for those citrus fruits that remain.
thanks in advance :-))

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

I have a freezer full of fresh orange juice. It keeps well and my husband uses it with his vodka and says it tastes fine. I use empty tonic bottles plastic of course. Another nice thing is to slice oranges and lemons and freeze they are lovely in drinks.

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

yep ziploc bags i always use them for slices of frozen lemons ,for people who come to me for a gin and tonic ,also saves space in the freezer instead of ice..

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

thanks,interesting.. i hadnt thought of the slices thing but we dont really drink so im not sure what fancy drink i would serve them in?! even so i like the idea..even if added to water...which i hear isnt drinkable in yalikavak..so need to get bottled.
i will try & rotate my twist/squeeze hand as i wouldnt want to have a right muscle develop over the next days more than the left!?...
does the juice taste best once thawed when it reaches room temp. or chilled does it still taste ok?

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

When we were kids we used to buy frozen concentrated orange juice in a can, we loved it once defrosted you diluted it with say 1 litre of water and it was really nice.

Now I am wondering if you could do the same thing, but how to concentrate the juice to start with, it might be worth doing a little experiment, the only way I can think of to concentrate the juice is to reduce it by boiling. Perhaps boil a pint of juice until it has reduced to a small amount, freeze it, defrost it and top it back up to the pint.

What do you think, could it work.

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

yes maybe ..i recal reading something online around the same idea & wondered myself..sounds interesting..i think husband will likely say 'bos ver' as he would think the boiling part would be a waste of energy (money) & not be cost effective...but will keep me busy in the kitchen ;-) so he cant complain on that count
lolly pops prob a nice idea too but i read they only stay fresh for about 3-4 months & i dont like lollys unless its hot & who knows how it will be in 3-4 months...weird & sunny this winter & not half as much rain as should be...wonder how harvests of this n that will or have been affected already? i hope we dont get late late rains...
i must say yalikavak seems quiet mild though in comparison to other areas in Mugla region
anyone other uses for frozen lemon/juice?

Re: Freezing fresh squeezed orange / lemon juice..

Theres always the wine route

Orange Wine

12 large, 15 medium or 20 small oranges

4 lb. sugar • 1 oz. yeast • 1 gallon water

Wipe the oranges clean with a damp cloth and cut them into small pieces. Pour the boiling water over them and leave to soak for two days. Crush well each day and work the peel between the fingers to extract the oil - doubling the peel over and pressing well (much flavor is obtain*ed from this). Strain, and put the juice through a jelly-bag, warming the juice to assist the sugar to dissolve. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved, and when the brew is cool enough sprinkle the yeast on top and stir in. Cover as directed and ferment for fourteen days; after which, proceed with bottling.

Tangerine Special

12-15 tangerines • 3½ lb. sugar • 1 oz. yeast

1 gallon water

Peel the tangerines and crush them by hand. Discard the peels. Pour the boiling water over the crushed fruit, and leave to soak for twelve hours. Strain and warm the juice to assist the sugar to dissolve. Pour the juice over the sugar and stir until all the sugar is dissolved. When the brew is cool enough sprinkle the yeast on top and stir in. Cover as directed and ferment for fourteen days; after which, proceed with bottling.
