Fat Disposal

(No, this should not be in the weight issues forum).

Does anyone know the safest and most ecological way to dispose of cooking oil that has been used for deep fat frying? We do not have any municipal facilities for disposal, I certainly don't want to put it in the Ariks (drainage ditches), if we were on mains drainage I would be reluctant to let it go there but we are not. All that is left is our cess pit. Is it safe and ecological sound to let it go there or is there any alternative?

Re: Fat Disposal

Wondered what you were talking about then, had ideas of fat reduction going thru' my mind!

Could you sieve it and re-use a few times for frying again? (depending how many times you've used it already)

If well used, then why not pour into a plastic container after its cooled and find out how local restaurants dispose of their oil.

Re: Fat Disposal

NEVER put it down the sink. Our old neighbours above us were always clogging the drain and when it overflowed guess where it went, yes under our window and we got the full force of the smell then we had to have the inconvenience of the drain being dug out and cleaned, admittedy they had to pay towards it but surely common sense tells you not to pour it down the sink!

Re: Fat Disposal

just googled it and i think my neighbour might have been hindering them rather than feeding them

Cooking fat

Fat from cooking is bad for birds. The problem with cooked fat from roasting tins and dishes is that the meat juices have blended with the fat and when allowed to set, this consistency makes it prone to smearing, not good for birds' feathers. It is a breeding ground for bacteria, so potentially bad for birds' health. Salt levels depend on what meat is used and if any salt is added during cooking.

Lard and beef suet on their own are fine as they re-solidify after warming and as they are pure fat, it is not as suitable for bacteria to breed on.
Polyunsaturated margarines or vegetable oils

These are unsuitable for birds. Unlike humans, birds need high levels of saturated fat, such as raw suet and lard. They need the high energy content to keep warm in the worst of the winter weather, since their body reserves are quickly used up, particularly on cold winter nights. The soft fats can easily be smeared onto the feathers, destroying the waterproofing and insulating qualities.
