Thumbs up Time for icecream!!

It's so warm today and the only thing I really fancied at lunchtime was icecream. Algida's not bad if you want a Magnum but a traditional Saleri (Maraş) Dondorma was what I was really after.

The secret of the taste of this delicacy is in the flour used in it's making and in times gone by it was said to be a natural preventative medicine against Cholera and TB. It's still believed to help in childbirth and ease all sorts of chest problems such as bronchitis, as well as being a natural aphrodisiac!

Traditionally, the dried tubers of wild orchids native to Turkey, are ground to a fine flour called Salep, drinks are also made from Salep flour in the winter months. This is mixed with sugar and goats', sheep's or cows milk to a smooth paste and frozen.
Once frozen, it's beaten with metal rods until it takes on it's elastic consistency. I remember when this was always served on a tea-plate in slices with a knife & fork, much easier to eat that way than in the cornets sold by our ice-cream makers (Maraş tossers??) these days.

Anyway, no Maraş to be found near our office so I settled for a tuna & cucumber sandwich on some excellent nutty brown bread!

Why couldn't you have chosen peach, apricot, strawberry, raspberry, kiwi, cherry or any of the other beautiful soft fruits available at the moment? These produce lovely sorbet but it could never resemble ice cream, different thing altogether.

Unfortunately, banana is the ONLY thing that I just can't eat.
I don't like the taste, the smell or the texture and have avoided them at all cost since I was old enough to say 'No thankyou'.

Frozen banana? Please let's not confuse this with the Turkish traditional Maraş taste extravaganza.
