TLF Wine Club

Whilst I am not new to wine, I am new to Madeira wine, so I am after some advice on how best to drink it, should I chill it and have it as an aperitif similar to a chilled white port, or leave it at room temperature and have it after my meal, or just quaff it like any other wine. Its just a supermarket bottle of Blandys and not one of the more expensive versions.

There must be someone in the know out there who can advise.

thanks

Martin

Re: TLF Wine Club

Best advice I could offer would be to rest left elbow on the bar, hold the stem of the glass between fingers and thumb of right hand. Raise the glass to ones lips and gently incline until contents have gone.

Repeat procedure until all the bottles are empty.

Any advice that differs from the above has come from a snob!

Re: TLF Wine Club

Tried a small glass tonight at room temp, I enjoy Port and was thinking this would be better, but it wasnt so, at that I will try it chilled and see how it goes, I think its essentially a bottle of "rough" which may suit me but not my taste. I will try the real thing when I get there.

Re: TLF Wine Club

Madera is definitely a dessert after dinner wine. I love it but only drink it after we have finished eating. For me it depends how hot room temperature is. I like to put it in the fridge but lift it out half an hour before I have a drink so it's not too cold. I love port as an after dinner drink as well as Bailey, Amaretto, brandy.......

Re: TLF Wine Club

Having been to many royal naval dinners madeira is always served at room temperature after dinner as an alternative to port. I personally prefer it to port. It is best enjoyed after several glasses of wine but before coffee.

Re: TLF Wine Club

Tillyfloss I agree with you but if room temperature is very, very hot (ie a Turkish summer) then a bit of chill, followed by being brought up a bit before drinking makes it perfect

Re: TLF Wine Club

I was served said in a restaurant , it was a lighter Madeira and it was specifically presented just chilled , as the waiter pointedly stated.

However i do believe at his demise the Duke of Clarence was served it at room temperature. Lol

Had a chilled glass of Offley Rose' Port last night , very enjoyable

Steve.
