Re: Cooking for Dummies

I would not presume that it was the same product , wholesale meat comes into third party storage , the packing and labeling companies work for several different retailers in their area , they will pack and label for whomsoever , the retailers monitor returns and complaints for product in store , it there is a sudden peak they will descend on the packer and demand inspection and recompense , the biggies will insist the packers have mixed qualities and there will be no let out .

Every day , quality meat is sampled from store and tested , it is also cooked and fed to focus groups daily in head offices in the restaurants . They all do this .

Re: Cooking for Dummies

Over the years I have worked in various food processing plants, I recall one that filled tetra packs with orange juice from a silo for a budget brand, when they hit the order they simply change to a premium brand packaging, no change of mix but no doubt different prices at retail.
A friend was a production manager at a cooked meat plant, the pork went into the process at one end of the line and came out the other and was sliced, packed and labeled for the budget supermarket again when the quota was met they simply changed the packaging to a premium supermarket, I asked what else, he told me the slice thickness was micro adjusted and no more.

Paying more doesn't mean buying better

For the main retailers , meat quality from packers is very carefully monitored , by and large i believe you get what you pay for .

It is logged and certificated at every stage , i do not think you can get charolais or Japanese wagyu on the cheap , very often .

I don't doubt on some products but mainstream stuff often does come from the main production lines using the same ingredients, the supermarkets don't need to claim theirs is a better quality product, the basics of marketing are to big the brand up ie Waitrose over Aldi.

Re: Cooking for Dummies

Oh agreed , apart from clear imports i know who makes every tin of baked beans on sale .
The people who say they do not make em for anyone else , it is true , they use the same manufacturer as everyone else...lol .

Re: Cooking for Dummies

Some great posts but I can (usually) cook baked beans OK – it’s steaks that are the problem - and goat chops!

They are supposed to be lamb chops Hils but I have my doubts.

I'll get another couple of hacksaws in and am sure we can sort any weight loss problems while you are here
