Cooking for Dummies

Someone has to do it even though I leave myself open to ridicule from those *#@%$* smug culinary geeks (bless them all).

So for today’s snafu I’ll kick off with English Crumpets a la BBC ( BBC Food - Recipes - Crumpets )…

Which I attempted this evening and made lots of then (I hadn’t realised how far a liter of dough would go but no worries the kitchen needed redecorating anyway).

Admittedly I didn’t have any ‘strong white flour’ (?) but otherwise I followed the instructions to a tee and…

1.Although only 1cm thick they were still uncooked and doughy in the middle despite the outsides being well browned.

2.And when I poured the dough into the rings they seemed to soak up a lot of the sunflower oil so the ‘crumpets’ weren’t anywhere near crispy.

When I reduced the amount of cooking oil the crumpets charred rather than become golden.

Any suggestions anyone?

Re: Cooking for Dummies

This proves my point. Cooking is bloody difficult
I am convinced most if not all those who go on the " what I ALLEGEDLY had for dinner" thread with tales of fancy meals- are liars

There I've said it

Re: Cooking for Dummies

Jaycee !!! Should use a practically Dry baking plate us Welsh us a bakestone !! Simply brush thin layer oil surface with oiled kitchen towel!! Pour onto cooking surface which shouldn't be excessively hot !!! COOK one side then the other !! Should be cooked through if you stick to recipe times & turn regularly !! Too hot crumpets burn too much oil crumpets greasy !! good luck Nice to see your having a go tho'

Re: Cooking for Dummies

What ever made you try to cook crumpets Jaycey when they are cheap and easy to buy ? Rather ambitious of you !!! Maybe next time stick to scrambled eggs then progress to more tricky things !!!! But good on you for trying lol.

Looks like you given some sound advice there Duke but could you please expand for a lil boykie from a backward African village ie. I had to Google dry baking plate & bakestone but doubt they are available here so will have to make do with a skillet and less oil - or maybe use butter instead?

I also now realise that the skillet was way too hot and that the BBC should stick to broadcasting!

But the recipe looked sooo easy and if you could tell me where I can find a Lidls or Waitrose in Zap I will be eternally grateful - I dream of buying crumpets (and pork pies, FB steak & kidney, McVities choc digestives etc …) in Zap.

And I’m reluctant to try scrambled egg but that might well be my next topic on this thread asking why it went wrong
