Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

So the cruise we are due to take in February is so far still going ahead except on a much smaller ship, we had booked a suite in the Yacht Club on Splendida, the replacement ship doesn't have a Yacht Club so our agent Cruiseclub claim that MSC are trying to sort a different package out for Yacht Club passengers, there is no equivalent or anywhere near, so we wont be going. Initially they told us they hadn't heard about the ship change, so we emailed them the official MSC press release we received 2 days before, strange considering they claim to sell more MSC cruises than MSC themselves.

Then today I got this on an email
https://eu.usatoday.com/story/travel...ks/5354654002/

Although we due to cruise the Caribbean it looks like this may be the new norm in cruising for a while to com.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

Its a tough one Martin

Obviously the proximity with others for substantial periods of time makes it a lot higher risk than ordinary holidays as well as the age profile oft found on many cruises makes the number of more vulnerable persons a concern too

I understand that side of it, but it will detract from the enjoyment of cruising, the larger ship held 3900 passengers and the smaller 2500 or thereabouts albeit in a much smaller area, but simply doesnt have what we have paid our deposit for, its the fact they are claiming to searching for an equivalent offering, I spoke direct to MSC yesterday and was told there is nothing anywhere near that experience available, it seems that the agents and holiday companies are staying afloat on deposits and payments for holidays they know they can't deliver, they really drag their feet when it comes to repayment.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

let's face it, cruising is dead in the water. I cannot imagine anyone putting them selves at the risk of being stranded on ship, and all ports being closed to you. The fate of those on the ship in Japan should be a warning to us all.

It is for us but you would be surprised at the numbers rebooking from cancelled cruises.
Linsey told me yesterday that the investment analysysts at her employ have recommended that shares in Carnival become a "hold" share, Carnival have enough liquidity to not sell another cruise for over a year, they are a massive company owning many of the brands. Many are not in that position and could well fail, we get regular emails from Virgin about their cruises on there brand new ships, I dont think they have actually sailed anywhere yet, lets see how long they last.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

We never did fancy the idea of a cruise, but reading this article made me question the sanity of some people in today's uncertain climate. I guess that for some, the alternative may be lockdown in a small flat.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

We were in the Netsel Marina in Marmaris in October and saw a huge cruise ship tied up there. When I checked on vesselfinder it had been tied up in Marmaris for over 2 months and wasn't going anywhere soon. There are probably cruise ships berthed all over the world just waiting for an upturn.
Turkey also has a big ship-scrapping business and has demolished several ship already this year.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

I think social distancing etc is with us for many moons yet & if I remember rightly the virus spread through some of these ships like a wildfire.
I’d been looking at cruises prior to the virus, even though I’m sea sickness prone but it’s something I’ve got to do.
There’s no safe holidays at the moment, give it a few months, then Governments and tour operators will be announcing “we’re safe”.........don’t fall for it.

The Disney Magic has been in Port in Dover since March. I hadn't even realised that it sailed from Dover.
Back in August we had Cunard's Queen Victoria floating around the Margate area. The local paper reported it was because they didn't have to pay any docking fees. I think it is has been in the Weymouth area since then.
