Lightbulb Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

As we have a few regular cruisers, I thought I'd start a thread to encourage some exchange of information.

What are the worst and best cruises, things to look out for and things to avoid.

My fear has always been of getting dodgy food and end up sitting with people I don't really want to be with.

What's the reality? I know there are a lot of bargains around most of the year but I have no idea what to look for

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

Mushtaq as per other thread have done a fair few all over the globe.

My favs have been Brazil, and Far East.

Theres no feeling like waking up in the morning in a new fascinating port/ country, similarly theres nothing like sitting up on deck with a beer in your hand as your ship slips out of Hong Kong, Cuba or wherever

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

Cruises now are very reasonable and have really levelled off in price.

We started cruising in 1999 our first ship was The Black Watch with company Fred Olsen, around the Med, that was the start of our love of cruises. We have cruised all around the Med done about 10 round there. It is a great way to dip your toes in a place and decide whether you would go back and we have done many places, loved Barcelona and went back there for a weeks stay. The Fjords, are top of our list, (been twice), followed by The Baltics, St Petersburg is an amazing city I have never seen a more colourful place since. Caribbean, (4 times) done most of the areas around there, the Far East, loved the balmy nights on board, saw a fantastic thunder and lightning storm, the like I have never seen again, we were leaving the ship in Kuala Lumpur when lightning struck the cruise terminal, thankfully it didn't strike us, lol. We are off on another on Oriana later in the year, Companies we have used are, Fred Olsen, Thomson, P&O, small companies whose names escape me. P&O are our favourite as we like the traditional cruises, always been fortunate to have a good dinner table of guests, we always go for an eight seating table.

Two of our close friends are Cruise Director and Senior Bars Manager on the Oriana, so we did really get looked after on our last cruise in July 13.

For pricing, it really is each to their own there are some great 'early bird' booking prices, or pick up a bargain nearer the time, we have done both these options.

We have not done around America or the Arctic as yet, the Arctic is one on our 'list to do' I haven't really fancied America, but maybe one day.

Love em or hate em, but we love em.

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

A great time to get a cheap cruise is as near to sailing date as poss

Think of it- if you're operating a hotel and have empty rooms on a Friday, guests may turn up Saturday

However for a cruise line sailing with empty cabins means serious loss of income. They do therefore give considerable discount close to sailing dates and then seek to make up costs through trips/ bar sales

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

Who are the good operators/companies and what websites to check for last minute bargains.

I would love to do the far east and south america, what routes are those?

Maybe we can organise a TLF Cruise?

Re: Cruise Holidays - Where and When to go

Relocation cruises are sold at excellent prices

These are end Oct and end March when cruise lines switch from Caribbean to Europe

Best Far Easts go out of both HK and Singapore.

A good tip here is if you can get a reasonable priced flight Star Cruises operate amazing Far East cruises at very cheap prices, often tailing the Nam, Thailand etc routes of the main players

South America can be cruised in two ways. Either from originating ports- Manaus is excellent for Brazil- or by Sector cruising, taking in parts of 60 or 100 night cruises which suit your needs. These too are often discounted
