Travelling across Europe using a car with Turkish plates

Hi. Has anyone recently driven through the EU using a car with Turkish numbers plates? Any tips please on insurance, breakdown cover or any problems you've come across, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We have been to Greece several times on our Turkish registered motorcycle.

We believe you need a 'green card' to take a Turkish vehicle into Europe. Speak to your broker as ours was only valid for the countries we intended to visit.

We have Kasko and pay extra to have it world wide. I've never been 100% certain whether this would cover breakdown and recovery, thankfully we have never needed to find out!

We also take out travel insurance - mainly to cover any health related expenses. This is very cheap.

My understanding is that the green card is the only 'requirement'. Everything else must depend on your personal circumstances (what insurance you already have in place etc).

That's really useful, thank you! I'll be contacting the broker tomorrow but do you know if there is a time limit on the green card? We may be out of the country for up to 6 months...

Green card is must for driving in Europe. When driving in Europe, you must carry your full driving licence, vehicle registration and insurance documents. If you’re taking a company car you’ll need a letter authorising you to drive it. In some countries police can impound your vehicle if you don’t have the correct documents. Never leave paperwork in the car where it might be stolen. Make sure your breakdown policy covers you abroad. The best policies cover the cost of getting your car home – and other expenses you might incur such as hotel accommodation. Check that your travel insurance is up to date.

When you go for the green card you specify the dates you want covered.

We did two trips to Greece on the last card so we 'wasted' some of the time for which we were covered....

Re: Travelling across Europe using a car with Turkish plates

Has anyone taken the ferry from Igoumenitsa, Greece to Ancona, Italy? I'm wondering if it's best to pre-book the crossing in advance or chance turning up at the port and buy the tickets then. I think it would less pressure to get to the port if I didn't have a crossing booked. A friend did this on the crossing from Italy to Greece so I wondered if would be the same from Greece to Italy out of peak season...

Re: Travelling across Europe using a car with Turkish plates

Hi. I've been told by my insurance broker that I need to obtain the Green Card at the border when leaving Turkey. As per usual, I like to double check everything I'm told here but there is nothing on the Turkish Motor Insurance Bureau website about how to apply for one (lots of other useful information but not that). Can you tell me how you obtained your Green Card please? Thanks!

Hi you can get your Igoumenitsa ticket at the port. there is a line of travel agents
as you drop down into the town. try a few different ones for the best price and you can also do a bit of bartering. We have done the journey 3 times return. Always got our green card before setting of. I believe you can get the green card at the border crossing, but have never done this.
