UK car hire

We have recently hired a car for a few days from Manchester airport and have been horrified at the cost of adding an additional driver (similar age and experience to original driver, no points on licence etc). Does anyone know of a car hire company that allows a second driver without charging an arm and a leg (in this case 67 on a 5 day hire)?

Re: UK car hire

Hi

Not knowing who you got a quote from .
We do much work for hire car company's and majority will charge for this as it is like there UK add on .
Have you tried enterprise ? They and budget rent a car a normally the most " human " in their approach .
With enterprise they tend to work on a price promise also if you email them directly .
So example oh I can get the same car from your competitor at this price and they don't charge as much for additional driver ,can you do it the same price ?

Give it a go .....take it your collecting at airport and roping back off ?

Thanks for the reply. We are going through Sixt and will try contacting them directly, I will also look at Enterprise. I have used them before, they are excellent but do not allow early morning drop offs. they only work 06:00 to midnight.

Re: UK car hire

You really need to think if its worth adding another driver as this is how the car hire company's make their money. This and additional excess insurance make what seems to be a cheap deal really expensive.
One tip i can give you is to purchase separate excess insurance on-line, i would recommend icarhireinsurance.com, cost for 5 days would be about 15 this will cover all the excess on the hire car (normally 1000 excess on both theft or damage). the insurance will also cover for wheels, tyres, windscreens etc.
This company is the only one i found that would insure a non UK resident, all the others require you to be a UK resident.
The hire company will try to sell you a reduced excess insurance at about 11 per day but you will still be liable for the first 250.
So please check the terms and conditions of hire.

Re: UK car hire

Does anyone know what we need to do before we return to the UK and pick up a hire car? I believe there is some kind of online check that we need to print to prove that we have clean licences.
