Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

Has anyone any experience of trains in the UK for late May, preferably going from Birmingham to Stansted and basically with knowledge of what days of the week are the cheapest day's to travel, although I'm actually looking for evening time journeys arriving at Stansted about 21:00 or 'just slightly later' to catch the 23:55 flight to Turkey.

I have been looking at the National Rail site but unfortunately there information is only for the next 12 weeks.

So the question is, do rail price's vary much between now and May?

The same question goes for Pegasus flights from Stansted to Bodrum (or Izmir) via Istanbul during late May, do the prices increase much from what they are today, which is as little as 61, or is that price pretty standard for the whole year round?

Would you advise booking a flight now at 61 and gambling on the rail fare being much the same as now, or wait until the train times and prices are published, which would be 12 weeks before flying?

Normally best days to travel for lowest fares is tues, wed, thurs

avoid UK bank holidays in May and watch out for price increases for flights during the schools half term time weeks in May

fares from Birmingham Airport to Stansted Airport with National Express start from around 28 one-way journey time ranges from 2.30 to 4 hours

Re: Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

The average National Express price from what I can see is around 46 one way, and quoted between 4-5 hours, unfortunately they go to Heathrow before travelling on to Stansted.

What do you think about not booking the flight until the train times and prices are released, which would then be 12 weeks before flying.

Thanks for the reminder with regards to school and bank holidays, which was something I hadn't considered, especially if booking the flight well in advance and taking a gamble on the trains.

Just checked and fortunately there doesn't seem to be any bank holidays during the period I'm thinking about.

Does anyone know when the schools in Birmingham have their holidays?

Re: Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

Bank holidays in may are normally 1st Monday ( May day ) and last Monday (Whitsun)

For half term you need to think about whole country not just Birmingham
half term can be anytime during the last 2 weeks of May so try and complete your journey before 20th May 2016.
I have found with trains if you try to book a single ticket with more than 1 train operator then it becomes very expensive

Greater Anglia for London to Stansted rarely offer discounts as they know their customers have no choice.
If you want to minimize your travel costs from Birmingham to Stansted spilt the ticket options into
Birmingham to London 1 ticket
London to Stansted 1 ticket
I have found Chiltern trains offer very good deals travelling from Birmingham to London Marylebone with tickets from 5 one way also check Virgin Trains
From London Marylebone I would take a National Express bus from Baker Street to Stansted ( Marylebone to Baker street is 5 min walk)
National Express buses run each hour and takes 1 hour ( depending on traffic) from Baker Street to Stansted stopping only at Finchley Road and Golders Green after Baker Street pickup fares from 5 / 8 for a single ticket
They are always offering special fares just get on their mailing list
I have found going the direct route single ticket Birmingham to Stansted that the train ticket can cost more than the flight ticket and then doesn't make any sense

Here a useful site for trains

Again thanks for that, but still looks like a waiting game because at the moment the results are these below.
Quote:
Warning - although you can book tickets this far in advance, you won't get the best fares. These are only released about twelve weeks before departure. We suggest that you try again within twelve weeks of departure.

Re: Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

Hi OF, here's a link to a company I use now & again to London, I think Esb has London to Stanstead covered . This company also only start taking bookings 3 months in advance, but there's usually plenty of choice & they're very cheap. They sell Train & Coach/Bus tickets.

Hope you have a good trip

Yes for trains you will need to wait until Feb next year before booking
If you steer clear of the bank holiday weekends ( that's when they schedule maintenance work ) and weekend's in general try and travel tue,wed thur you should be okay lowest single fare I could find for 12 weeks in advance was 30 with Virgin Birmingham to Euston, Euston to Tottenham Hale and Tottenham Hale to Stansted Airport

Ok, looks like a waiting game.

Obviously I do mind paying over the odds, but a direct journey would suit me better, lets face it, it's a long enough day as it is without having to trapes around the London underground or coach system and not forgetting you are talking to someone who can get lost very easily (directions are not my forte) plus having suitcase in tow would not help.

Re: Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

As far as pegasus are concerned i would suggest you book as early as possible. Their business model is the same as most airlines....the closer to departure the more expensive.
As an example a return fliight booked for xmas and new year for 70 when they went on sale in march is now 200. One booked for february for 70 is now 150 and will increase.
Unlike Thomas Cook who sometimes reduce prices nearer departure Pegasus do not in my experience flying with them for many years.

Re: Best Train times & fare prices to Stansted

Trainline has all the connections and the sooner you book the cheaper it is. Leave till the last minute and you buy the train.

İ always use National Express easier and cheaper and more reliable and in my case Gatwick/Stanstead - South west quicker. Get on the bus and stay on, no changing used the train and got standed on Reading station middle of the night cold and windy all staff gone and an announcement ''Your train has been cancelled''.
