Question Ferry from Turkey via Greece to Italy

Would like to travel from the Med/Aegean coast by ferry to Greece and then on to Italy. In Italy I plan to take a train everywhere else in the EU (I am not going to the UK)

Anyone out there who has had this experience?

If so, do you recommend any web sites where I can search for dates and time and fares please?

Any other tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Ferry from Turkey via Greece to Italy

We go to Greece quite frequently. And we have taken ferries between Greece and Italy (though admittedly not for several years).

Getting information on ferries between Greece and Turkey is a bit like pulling teeth.

Online Ferry Tickets between Kusadasi-Samos, Marmaris-Rhodes, Bodrum Kos, Cesme-Chios, Fethiye-Rhodes - Ferries By Feribot.net

is one of the better sites.

Information on the summer ferries doesn't tend to be available till just before they start running.

Once you're in Greece it's easy - you just get yourself to Athens then on a bus to Patras from whence there are frequent ferries to Italy. Most of the Greek ferry lines have websites...

We usually travel with a motorcycle but, as a foot passenger, you will have more options.

Without knowing more of what you're looking for, the only tip I would give is to get a cabin for any overnight journeys. Unless you are very good at sleeping in adverse conditions or don't mind going without sleep at all.

If you don't mind not having a cabin, there's no really good reason to book ahead. Ferries can be cancelled or delayed at the last minute due to a huge variety of reasons though, when we missed ours, we were put on another one and only had to pay the difference...

We travelled from Igoumenista ( Greece) to Ancona Italy a couple of years ago. I cannot remember the name of the ferry company . Something like ANEK. There is plenty of info on the internet.

I suggest that you pay a little bit extra for a cabin. Very comfortable and more civilised than trying to sleep in a chair .

I had also heard that in the last year, the Greek ferries were not so reliable due to the crisis. Now that the refugee crisis is added to the situation, it would seem that their reliability might be even more in question.

I also thank the others who answered for their useful and helpful information. Anyone else with recent information or experience travelling this way will be greatly appreciated.

Try this site for Athens to Turkey.

Greek Ferries | Ferries to Greece | Ferry Crete-Santorini
