Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

Yeah as I say it's genuinely difficult to compare where you are better off

For example if somewhere costs you less money but is maybe a lower standard or even more criticality if you are not as content there-is it the better place to be?

You have to be happy and healthy, more important than lower standards or lots of dosh in the bank although the latter does allow for certain contentment.

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

The other interesting thing to me is the cost of labour. We have a smallholding (10,000m2) to stop us getting bored in our retirement. Sometimes we hire someone from the village to help out. What would the wages be for a villager to work in the field for a day? Here we have three prices, usta (qualified eg plasterer/builder), labourer for average work eg strimming, collecting fruit, and hard work eg digging

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

Again that's a strange one.

Unemployment in much of Spain is very high, youth unemployment is chronically so, in some areas 39%

Therefore labour prices are squeezed well down. Obviously a difference is you can hire any nationality you can think of with there being much fewer restrictions on who can work. That could be an advantage in some circumstances.

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

This turning into Question Time! Apologies.

I was recently was talking to a bloke who had lived for several years in your (new) neck of the woods. He had a business there. He told me that the local Spanish were quite resentful to ex-pats because they felt they were responsible for the current mess of their country i.e. people en-masse buying and speculating on property and then suffering the consequences when the bubble burst.

So what are the locals really like and is speaking Spanish an absolute must?

As you know, around the Fethiye area, it is difficult to find a local who doesn't want to speak English!

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

No resentment whatsoever

If anything because of the economic situ money etc coming into areas is more welcome than ever. Furthermore in many of the small villages in our area foreigners ( esp Scandanavians) make up as much as 15% of the population. That's a very welcome boost to villages which were in population decline.

But where I would highlight even more how welcome and accommodating the Valencians are is that in virtually every council they have specific staff there to assist foreign residents.

This is further enhanced by the growing amount of foreigners who are council members, deputy mayors etc-remember unlike Turkey everything including politics and local positions of responsibility are totally open to non Spaniards. There's more than a few councils with several English/Norwegians well placed on them.

As regards the language yes whilst they go out of their way to help you- including free classes-if you move there long term you would be expected, for politeness if nothing else to make an effort with the language.

We are only there a wet day and so far I have found the locals including local mayor amazingly friendly and welcoming

Same in Marmaris, the result being few ex-pats bother to learn Turkish. If you speak to someone in Turkish they invariably ask you why, I speak English.

I found it very frustrating at times when I lived there.

Re: Advantages/Disadvantages

I know what you mean Bickern.

Its different in Valencia in that it's a very different language to Spanish and most foreigners who learn Spanish learn Castillano not Valencian

Have already had a few of the locals in stitches at my attempts at their lingo
